Mr. Walt Scobie Sr. 82, of Rochester passed away at 3:04 AM on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

On June 29, 1939, Walter Edward Scobie was born in Kokomo to Eldon Everett and Phyllis Lilly Scobie. Growing up he shared his childhood in Pure Michigan with a sister Donna and two brothers Everett and John.  Walt graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School,  Royal Oak, MI with the Class of 1958.

Answering the call of patriotism, Walt joined the United States Coast Guard in 1958. He was stationed at the Stannard Rock Lighthouse, 47 miles off the shore of Station Marquette, Michigan.  Walt was among 3 survivors of the tragic explosion and fire of the lighthouse he and three other Coast Guardsman maintained and shared as their duty home. Walt and three generations of his family returned to the storied lighthouse on a memorable trip back in June of 2015. He was honorably discharged in 1962.

Walt and Sharon Lee Eisler were married on January 1, 1959 in Troy Michigan. They have shared 63 years of life's adventures. From their union came two daughters and a son. The blessings of two more generations have been added to the family tree.

With a new appointment to assume the management of Fulton Industries, Walt, Sharon and the kids moved to Rochester. As their kids grew up the Scobie's north shore Lake Manitou home was the gathering hub.  With a great passion for the water and skiing, this was the perfect place for their family.  Walt was always amidst the action pulling the kids water skiing or pontooning, cruising on the sparkling waters and watching the sunset with Sharon.

Winter time brought on ice skating and snowmobiling.  Walt made certain everything was running smoothy.   After retirement he specialized in customer service at Enyart's True Value.  He is remembered for his hearty laugh, keen knowledge on methods of repair and uncanny memory of where everything was in the store.  Walt always greeted his customers with a warm smile and helping heart.

A great attribute was Walt's kindness and his love for being with and talking to people, he never knew a stranger. He had the gift of gab and was a life learner. He often assisted family, friends and neighbors with repairs.  His memberships include the Moose Lodge #1107 and Elks Lodge # 2120, both of Rochester.

Left to cherish Walt's memory are his wife, Sharon; three children:  Laura S. "Lori"  (Jack) Riggs, Tamora A. "Tammy" (Amado) Mejia, Walter E. "Todd" (Wendy Marie) Scobie; nine grandchildren:  Emily Mae (Matthew) Alcini, Ryan Scott (Amber) Riggs, Megan Ann Howard, Katie Lee Howard, Emma Elizabeth Howard, Zackary Lucas Scobie, Chad Hayden Scobie (Kellie), Sidneigh Marie Scobie, Wesley Eldon Scobie; nine great grandchildren:  Aubrey Alcini, Alyson Alcini, Autumn Alcini, Greyson Rhodes, Hugo Howard, Micah Howard, Luci Ryan Scobie, Amelia Marie Scobie, Watson Todd Scobie;  three siblings: Donna (Bill) Ackerman, Everett Eldon Scobie , John Scott(Cathy) Scobie; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of the life of Mr. Walter Edward Scobie will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 24, 2022 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18 ^th St., Rochester . Pastor Terry Baldwin will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 12 noon to 3:00 PM on Friday in the funeral home.  Military honors will be accorded by the Fulton County Veteran's Honor Guard and the United States Coast Guard Honor's Team.  Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Lake Manitou Association, P.O.
