Mr. Steven L. Stamberger, 49, of Rochester, passed away at 1:15 PM, Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the intersection of St. Rd. 42 & 59, in Brazil, following a motor vehicle accident. Steve was born in Mendota, IL on October 4, 1962, the son of Melvin and Wilma Horn Stamberger. He shared his childhood with a sister Kathy and a brother Chuck. When Steve was a first grade student he and his family moved from Mendota to Newcastle township, northeast of Rochester. Steve learned a stealth work ethic from his dad, growing up on the farm. They were primarily grain farmers planting wheat, corn and soy beans annually. He enjoyed history and locomotives, acquiring the skill and craftsmanship to assist his dad with the building of a 1.5 inch scale locomotive. Steve was a proud graduate and member of the Tippecanoe Valley High School class of 1980. Being introduced to his future wife and lifelong partner on a blind date, Steve married Jayne Renee Allen on February 15, 1992 in Rochester. Their union spanned just over 20 years and produced two wonderful children, Jordan and Cyndi. Steve and Jayne, a dynamic couple, were totally devoted and nearly inseparable sharing life's adventures together. An active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Steve served his church as usher and was on the board of stewardship. He was also a thirty year member of the Hesston Steam Power Society in LaPorte County. It was a family tradition and annual event to spend many summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day, taking to the 7 inch train track and engineering their locomotive steam engine, allowing friends and new acquaintances the thrill of a historic ride. Jayne, Jordan, Cyndi, and Wilma joined Steve and Melvin in the fun and served as a conductor or sold tickets at the depot. A lifelong farmer, Steve farmed his ground planting and harvesting corn, wheat and beans. He also did custom work for extended family and friends while working alongside his dad Melvin and brother Chuck. A dedicated member of the Del Monte Corporation, Steve oversaw the mixer for over 30 years at the Plymouth plant. Dedicated to his family, paramount in his life, Steve cherished and loved spending time with them. Steve is lovingly remembered by his wife Jayne, a daughter, Cyndi Stamberger and a son, Jordan Stamberger both of Rochester; his parents Melvin and Wilma Stamberger; a sister, Kathy Snipes and husband Gary of Rochester; a brother, Charles Stamberger and wife Melva of Rochester; Grandparents-in-law, Stan and Bonnie Tuttle; Aunts and Uncles, Arnold and Kay Horn of Rochester and Mildred Stamberger of Mendota, IL; sister-in-laws Mandy Allen Pogar and husband Dennis, Kristi White, and Lynn Heck; brother-in-law Danny Gabriel, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins who also survive. Steve will also be missed by his church family, his Del Monte family and the many friends he made along life's journey. Steve was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Alden and Gertrude Horn, paternal grandparents Herman and Hilda Stamberger, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Jacqueline Allen and Robert Peterson. Rev. Steven Resner will officiate services. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
