Stanley Samuelson, 92, passed away Sunday at Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester. He was born on June 12, 1918, to Oscar and Kittie Karr Samuelson. He came to Rochester from Iroquois County, Ill., after graduation to work at the Armour Creamery which was then managed by his brother-in-law. He married Anita Zimmerman on Oct. 15, 1940. She preceded him in death in 1995. He was drafted by the U.S. Navy in May of 1944, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the USS LST 867. When he returned home from the war in May of 1946 he started his career with the Nickle Plate Railroad and worked for them until his retirement. He loved sports and knew the standings of most teams in baseball, basketball, football and golf. Pitching horseshoes was one of Stanley's fortes. With a flick of the wrist and an eye for the stake he was crowned as champion during a few area tournaments. In his early years Stan enjoyed coaching Little League baseball. More recently he could be seen in the stands as a fan, following the sports teams of his great-grandchildren. He was an avid bowler but after his retirement found his true passion, playing golf. Weather permitting, he played almost every day. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. He is survived by his son, Phil Samuelson; two daughters, Joyce Sroufe, and Judith Overmyer; seven grandchldren, two of whom still live in Rochester, Sarah Daulton and Erin Leap; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Wilkinson and Frances Haines. Along with is wife he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Services for Stanley Samuelson are at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Maurice Grindle officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment is in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion No. 36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343, both of Rochester.
