Obituary

Shirley Joanne Bennett, 73, of Rochester passed away in the early morning hours on September 23, 2025.

On October 14, 1951, Shirley Joanne Phillips was born in Indianapolis.  She was a treasured daughter of Donald E. and Marita M. Grissom Philips.  Growing up she shared her childhood with a little sister Linda and a brother Mark.  She was a proud graduate of the class of 1969 from Howe High School, Indianapolis.

In Indianapolis, on October 24, 1969, Shirley married Mr. Jesse Bennett, Jr.  Together they shared 35 years of life's adventures.  From their union came two handsome sons.  The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of two more generations.

With a strong work ethic, Shirley worked as an operator of Indiana Bell Telephone in Indianapolis for many years. Later she worked at the Col H. Wier Cook Indianapolis International Airport on a team that cleaned the interiors of the aircraft.

Shirley was a very loving, spiritual Christian woman. She enjoyed riding horses, playing volleyball, spending time with her sons, and just generally loved being around people and participating in activities. Shirley also always looked forward to going on adventures with her sister, Linda, and her husband, Bob.

One of her favorite things was gathering with family for celebrations and the holidays. She especially loved Christmas.  As a grandma, she was very proud to oversee four generations.  Shirley was loved by all who knew her, and she will be eternally missed by her family; but the many memories made will continue to live in their hearts as a part of her great legacy.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her mother, Marita Philips of Rochester:  two sons:  Jeffrey Scott Bennett and his wife Elaine of Danville, IL, Tracy Lee Bennett of Indianapolis;  five grandchildren: Lakelynn, Hailey, Destiny, Trae, Gavin;  nine great-grandchildren: Jadiel, Javier, Lisabela, Esmeralda, Kennedy, Kadence, Jay, Junie, Emileia; and her sister Linda Showley and husband Bob of Kewanna.

Preceding Shirley in death are her husband Jesse in 2004, brother Mark Philips, and father Donald Philips.

To honor Shirley's request, her family will have private graveside services at the Washington Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.
