Mrs. Sharon Kay Cook, 72, was surrounded by her loving family when she was called home by our Lord and Savior on September 21st from her Earthly residence at 2320 Wolf's Point Drive Rochester. She was born in Peru, on May 21, 1939, to Robert and Iris Hedrick Kunkle. Growing up she shared her childhood with brother, Ed. In 1957 Sharon graduated from Bunker Hill High School. Later she attended I.U. at Kokomo. On May 28, 1958 Sharon married her best friend, John W. Cook in Peru. Their union of nearly 53 1/2 years produced four children Cindy, Ginger, Tim and Mark. Over the years the family tree flourished to add seven grandchildren and a great grandson. A successful bank professional, Sharon worked in the banking industry for nearly three decades. Many locals will remember her warm smile and friendly personna, for 17 years she was with Teacher's Credit Union. Community oriented and always wanting to help make our town a better place, her memberships earlier included the Optimist Club, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and she was active with Relay for Life honoring her mother's memory. She loved to knit and crochet and created booties and caps for the little babies born at Woodlawn Hospital. An active member of the 1st Baptist Church, many remember she and John in the red canoe serving breakfast at boat church. Living on the lake was a joy she held near to her heart. For this place provided the activity level fitting for her family. Sharon many times served as boat driver for the skiiers and was usually on the water somewhere to help out where she was needed. At the card table she and John enjoyed spirited games of euchre, with her card buddies and Cindy she enjoyed Bunco. Expressing herself musically, Sharon was an accomplished pianist. Sharon was a proud matriarch of her family overseeing four generations. She lived to enjoy the summertime activity "cousins week," an annual event she hosted for all of her grandchildren. They all know Grandma rocked and savoured that special time they shared! Well known for her special baked beans, she enjoyed cooking for the crew and hosting many family celebrations and holiday events. Sharon and John could be seen poolside, in the stands or auditorium supporting the grandkids athletic and academic activites and music programs. Those who are left to treasure Sharon's memory and to continue her legacy are her best friend and husband John, at home; two daughters, Cindy York of Rochester, and her children, Melissa York, Krystal Schultz & husband John and Patrick K. York Jr., and Ginger Liegibel of Indianapolis, and her children, Andrea Barts & husband Landon and Brandon Liegibel; two sons, Tim Cook & wife Velma of Empire, MI, and their children, Nicholas Cook and wife Jannipher and Alex Cook, and Mark Cook & wife Jamie of Indianapolis; one great grandson: Peyton Kreiger; and one brother, Ed Kunkle & wife Judy of Peru. She was preceded in death by her parents. A celebration of the life of Sharon Cook will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday. September 24, 2011 with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011, and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
