Roy W. Glentzer, 91, 3022 E. 300 South, passed away Tuesday at Life Care Center of Rochester where he'd been a patient for a few days. He was born in Rapid City, Mich., on Aug. 31, 1919, to Winfield and Edith (Liggitt) Glentzer. Growing up he was one of seven children sharing his childhood with five sisters and a brother. Following his high school years, Roy answered the call of patriotism and served our country with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a diesel mechanic and also was a member of the infantry. He was awarded a Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal. Earning the designation of Sergeant, Roy concluded his stint with the 1458th Engineer Maintenance Company and was honorably discharged on Dec. 28, 1945. Returning home he married Dorothy Anne Cotton. As a young lady of 46, she was tragically killed in an automobile accident. He later married Betty Geane Lowe, who preceded him on Jan. 3, 2009. Roy's memberships include the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Manitou Moose Lodge No. 1107, LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36, and the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343. As a master mechanic, Roy kept all of the earthmovers, bulldozers and other heavy equipment operating to perfection for the McMahan-O'Connor Construction Co. During moments of down time, Roy's creativity and inventive nature shone through as he perfected modifications for the machinery, later patented by McMahan-O'Connor. At home he created a three-wheeled crane that was used to help him with domestic projects. He perfected a raking system for the yard that spanned nearly 12 feet, and a hook up for two riding mowers cutting the mow time in half. A true artist with a welding torch, Roy's inventive dreams became reality. He was also called on to create and problem solve for local aviators. Roy is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Tracy S. Lewis, Rochester; son David Glentzer, Lacoochee, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Quier, Rochester, and Kitty Kesler and husband Jim, Rochester; 12 grandchildren; five plus several more great-grandchildren; and canine companion Jake, a Shih Tzu. Along with his wives he was preceded by his parents; two daughters, Lorraine Hunter and Sue Miller; five sisters, Mary Bechdolt, Treva Teel, Marie Spahr, June Grogg, and Donna Hunt; and brother Darrell Glentzer. A celebration of the life of Mr. Roy W. Glentzer is at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Larry Pyeatt officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment is at Athens-Hoover Cemetery, Athens. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion No. 36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343. Preferred memorials may be made to the Eagles Lodge.
