Mr. Roy D. Calvert, 70, of Rochester, passed away at 7:15 PM Thursday, October 9th, at his home. On January 15, 1944, Roy Dale was born in Fulton County, a treasured son of Robert A. and Eldora M. Bowman Calvert. Growing up in Newcastle Township near Talma with the exception of three years in Richland Center, Roy shared his childhood with a sister Roberta and a brother Rolland. During his high school years he played basketball for the Talma Tigers. With great pride he graduated with his class in May of 1963. Roy and Patricia A. Ullery first met during fair week, at the Fulton County 4 - H fairgrounds in July of 1961. Their first official date was October 13, 1961. The couple continued the dating scene and Roy loved hanging out at Baxter Drugs where Pat was a Baxter soda fountain girl. On July 4, 1963, Roy married Pat, the love of his life who later became his best friend, at the Talma United Methodist Church. Together they enjoyed 51 years of life's adventures. From their union came three wonderful children: Jennifer, Gary and Jeff. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of ten grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. As a young 15 year-old man, Roy began developing a strong work ethic while working for L.G. Vandermark at his chicken farm. He also enjoyed stints with NIPSCO, Dean's Milk, Talma Fastener and McMahan - O'Connor Construction Company before he initiated his professional law enforcement career under Homer Carr's administration as deputy sheriff in 1970. Roy's career spanned 37 years, serving Rochester as Police Chief on multiple appointments and he was elected as Fulton County Sheriff for two terms, retiring in 2006. He was revered by his fellow colleagues, and as a role model for young officers to set the standard. Sheriff Roy was admired and respected by the residents of our county. A gentleman with great compassion for others, Roy served our community since 2009 at the Good Family Funeral Home, greeting friends and helping folks with special requests. As one of the three amigos, Roy, Jim Hubbard and Dennis Reichard hung tight with their chosen profession as law men. As great friends they enjoyed many good times after work. Always there for one another, each had the other's back without fail. An adventurer, Roy enjoyed traveling with Pat, touring the US and and occasionally cruising around the Caribbean. To relax, he enjoyed ridin' the 4-wheeler around the family compound or floating the Tippecanoe. The river embraced the west edge of their property, serving as a sanctuary to fish , float in the tube or even just sit in the sand while watching the current flow by. Back in 2008, Roy built the Pavilion strategic to the river, nestled among the deciduous trees serving as a haven for family and special friends to gather for celebrations, birthdays, reunions and other life's events. An antique car buff, Roy is the proud owner of a robin egg blue 1956 Studebaker truck and a 1984 cream and crimson Dodge 600 convertible. Other coveted Studebaker treasures include his 1952 Starlite Coupe and the 1949 blue coupe Champion 2-door. Tinkering in his shop and hanging out with the guys at Craig's Welding, are integral parts of his daily routine. Each morning straight up at 8:00 the board meeting convened always present at the table with Roy were his lifelong friends Don, Paul, Gene and Barry. Together they would hash and rehash the news of the day, solving many of the world's problems. Pat and Roy attend the Burton-Richland Center United Methodist Church. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge #79, Scottish Rite, South Bend, and Mizpah Shrine of Ft. Wayne and the Royal Center Eastern Star #524. Roy was a vibrant, spirited member of the Fulton County Republicans serving Newcastle Township as Precinct committeeman. He looked forward to the primary in May and the election each November working at the polling places. Left to cherish Roy's memory are his wife, Pat; a daughter, Jennifer Berlasty; two sons: Jeffery Calvert and wife Jennifer, Gary Calvert and wife Laura, all of Rochester; 10 grandchildren: Jessica Berlasty, Jonah Berlasty, Jeremy Sheetz, Jordan Sheetz, Jarod Sheetz, Amber Snelling and husband Ricky, Amanda Floyd and husband Andrew, Alyssa Calvert, Austin Calvert, Cody Long; 6 great grandchildren: Gage Sickmiller, Gracie Snelling, Gabbie Snelling, Madison Floyd, Bralynn Floyd, Makenzie Dovich and several nieces and nephews. Chaplain Jason See will officiate services. Interment will be in the Reichter Cemetery.
