Rochester businessman, Mr. Robert Dell, 86, passed away at 5:54 AM Friday, April 4, 2014 at Woodlawn Hospital. On May 19, 1927, Bob was born in Fulton County, near Nyona Lake, the treasured son of Ira and Mabel S. Hicks Dell. As the second youngest of four children, growing up he shared his childhood with a sister Ruth and two brothers, Richard and Leo. With great Bulldog pride, Bob graduated with his class from Fulton High School in 1945. Patriotism beckoned and Bob answered the call serving our country during World War II with the United States Navy. The Pacific Theatre composed his tour of duty. He specifically was involved in the war on the Marshall Islands, Japan, China and Hawaii. Nancy L. Geller and Robert Dell were united in marriage on January 13, 1987 in Las Vegas. Their union provided 27 years of life's adventures. An entrepreneur, Bob owned and operated the D & D Oil Company, a member of Phillips Petroleum Group, for forty years until he retired in 1993. During this time he was a member of the Rochester Rotary Club, serving as Past-President. He was a member of the Moose Lodge family Center #1107 for more than 50 years. Bob was also a member of the Leroy Shelton American Legion Post #36 and the Indiana Sheriff's Association. As an outdoorsman, Bob loved fishing, using both a casting rod and fly rod, on the sparkling waters of Lake Manitou from his home on the north shore. Over the years, there were many pilgrimages with the kids to Manistee Lake in Michigan to drop their lines and fish. More recently he and Nancy would trek up to Nelson Lake in Wisconsin in pursuit of bass, bluegill and Northern Pike. They also enjoyed the great hunt in the spring here in northern Fulton County, as well as Michigan, in search of the beautiful morels. In the winter, he enjoyed the beaches of Florida, especially the challenges of flying his stunt kite. The wood shop in his garage is where Bob created many unique gifts for family and special friends. Among them are custom shelving units, animal figurines, coat racks and key holders along with Mickey and Minnie Mouse figures. As the patriarch of the Dell family, overseeing four generations, Bob loved the many joys his ten grandchildren brought him. A new generation with twenty great-grandkids lit up his life even more. The laughter and fun of family times were the best remembered at holidays and special family celebrations. Grandpa Dell, sometimes known as Pop Dell, was a connoisseur of board games. He shared his passion for the games, instilling sportsmanship with his cherished legacy. Among his favorites were Pictionary, Sorry, and cribbage. He provided great competition with dominos, hearts and euchre. Left to cherish Bob's memory as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother are his loving wife Nancy; five daughters: Cindy Goodman and husband Robert of Rochester, Diana Harrell and husband Don of Belleview, FL, Cindy Pike, Pati Parker and Frankie Ritter; a son, Dennis Dell and wife Debbie of Rochester; 10 grandchildren: Robert "Bobby" Dell and wife Elaine of Winamac, Jason Dell and wife Evelyn of Rochester, Jodi Calvert and husband Chad of Rochester, Jami Wade and husband Greg of Maple Grove, MN, Cassie Murphy and husband Eric of Rochester, Tomi Meadke and husband Roger, Lori Keen and husband Stephen all of Belleview, FL; Dale Shuey, Greg Shuey and Eleanor Shuey; 20 great grandchildren; a sister Ruth Nelson of Fresno, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Bob in death are his parents and 2 brothers, Richard Dell and Leo R. Dell, and a son Don Shuey. Pastor John Branch will officiate services. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the US Navy Military Rites Team. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
