Richard "Dick" Reed, 87, of Rochester, passed away at 9:00 PM, Monday, July 15th, at Life Care Center of Rochester. Born in Rochester on March 16, 1926, Richard Bruce was the treasured son C. Lee and Vera Dale Love Reed. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister Ione and a brother Ted. In 1944, Dick graduated with his class from Kennewick High School in Kennewick, Washington. With patriotism beckoning, Dick served our country with the US Army infantry during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation with the 94th, 1st Infantry Divisions and the 70th Tank Battalion. PFC Reed was highly decorated with the coveted Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He served under legendary General George S. Patton, and was wounded during his stint in Germany. Shrapnel was impaled in his neck that he lived with his entire lifetime. Dick met Velma Iona Flynn, on a blind date. It was nearly love at first sight. Just a few months later they married on August 8, 1953. Together they spent nearly 54 years sharing life's adventures. Sadly Velma passed away on July 31, 2007. Astute in the area of technology---almost before his time, Dick worked for Rockwell International, The Admiral Group and Security Corp., all of the electronics industry located on the west coast. Following his retirement he came from Oregon to Rochester to be close to his family. Dick is lovingly remembered by a brother, Ted L. Reed and wife Ava of Redding, CA; 9 nieces and nephews including GeNelle and Ernest Smoker of Rochester, and Larry and Janice Zellers of LaFountain. Preceding Dick in death was his parents, his beloved wife Velma who passed in 2007, and a sister Ione Zellers. Rev. Maurice Grindle will officiate services. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the US Army Honors Team.
