Mr. Richard Paul "Dick" Bair, 85, of Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at home Saturday, May 4, 2013. Born on May 14, 1927, near Tiosa, Richard Paul was the treasured son of Malon and Trella Kenly Bair. Growing up on the farm, he shared his childhood with a sister Mary Louise. During the years of his youth he assisted his dad with the family farming operation. Primarily crop farmers they raised corn, wheat and soy beans. In 1945 with great wildcat pride, Dick graduated with his class from Richland Center High School. On August 16, 1951, patriotism beckoned, and Dick answered the call serving with the U.S. Marine Corp. During his stint with the Marines, he was charged as link trainer, teaching pilots to fly at night with exclusive reliance on the flight deck instruments. On August 15, 1953, Sgt. Richard P. Bair was honorably discharged. Many remember Dick as the owner of Richard Bair Photography, a talented professional photographer capturing life's most memorable events, weddings, graduations, and anniversaries to name a few. In 1976 he shot his last professional images and moved to seed corn sales, allowing him to return to his first love, agriculture. As sales representative for Syngenta, he retired in 1992. From 2000 until 2009 Dick served our Fulton County Veterans as their service officer. In Rochester, on October 20, 1990 Dick married his best friend and the love of his life Augusta "Augie" Bathrick. Dick first laid his eyes on her while she was perched upon a bar stool....at Baxter Drug Store. Their admiration was mutual and escalated. Together they shared 22 years of life's adventures while blending a family of six wonderful children. An avid gun collector, Dick was a member of the N.R.A. and other gun entities. He also was the proud owner of a stylish hat collection. Dick also collected many fine writing instruments that he would color coordinate with his apparel of the day. To relax he and Augie enjoyed Sunday afternoons touring the countryside observing the farmer's progress and the varying stages of crop maturity from planting to the harvest. As adventurers, Dick and Augie visited the Mississinewa Reservoir. Not long ago they enjoyed hiking the trails. One of their last visits required that they scale up the side of a cliff on tree roots. They made it, huffing and puffing, then nearly collapsing at the picnic table close to their parked car. More recently they both enjoyed visiting the Judy Burton Nature Preserve to watch the Bald Eagle soaring high or swooping over the pristine waters of the lake and catching it's supper as the sun set. Dining out was a favorite activity. Dick and Augie especially enjoyed Jarretty's Place. They could always visit with family and friends while keeping abreast of Rochester's latest. Dick particularly enjoyed watching the towns traffic---seeing who all was out and about. A loyal and devoted life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Dick attended church here for more than 80 years. He served his church in every capacity and sometimes twice. Dick was an elder, trustee and treasurer for a number of years. He served the congregation as President for multiple terms. He honored his family with the creation and erection of a stained glass window in the sanctuary. Dick is lovingly remembered by his wife Augie at home; five daughters: Ellen Fitzpatrick and husband Charles of Arlington, TX, Suzanne "Susie" Bair, Amherst, NY, Jennifer Crane and husband Bill of Bloomington, Edie Hisey of Rochester, Judy Griffis and husband Brad of Tippecanoe; a son, Matthew Thompson and wife Judy of Kenosha, WI; 8 grandchildren: Damien Shriver, Natalie Crane, Jackie Apt, Billie Reiter, Tanner Griffis, Adam Hisey, Jessica Hettinger and Justin Thompson; and 16 Great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents, a sister Mary Louise Bair, and a son-in-law Russell Hisey. Military honors will be accorded by the Fulton County Veteran's Honor Team and the U.S. Marine Corp Honor Team.
