Former Rochester resident, Mr. Ray M. Pownall, 83, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away early Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at the Budd Terrace Nursing Home at Wesley Woods near Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Just after the depression, on March 3, 1930 in Fulton, Ray was born the treasured son of Lee & Lula D. Cline Pownall. Growing up he was the youngest, sharing his childhood with a sister Helen and two brothers, Roy and Don. In May of 1948 with great Bulldog pride, Ray graduated from Fulton High School with the distinction of being named the class salutatorian. He also played the trumpet and cornet in the Bulldog band. His love for music and the brass instruments was a life long hobby he passionately pursued. Ray and Lillian Sue Hartzler were married on October 2, 1948 in Fulton. Together they shared over 41 years of life's adventures. From their union came two sons and two daughters. Through the years their family tree grew to include the added blessings of seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. Later Ray married Phyllis Kramer, who survives. Ray was a dedicated member of the United States Postal Service for 36 years. He also worked as an Allstate Insurance agent for 15 years. To relax Ray enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and was talented with the restoration and repair of wicker. Mourning his loss, left to cherish Ray's memory are his wife Phyllis Kramer Pownall of Crawfordsville; four children: Michael Pownall and wife Ruth MacDonald, Jacqueline Sue "Grace" Pownall and husband Ron Harris, Teresa Causey and husband Johannes, Peter Pownall and wife Diane; seven grandchildren: Dana, Cameron, Ashley, Katherine, Megan, Rebecca, Lee; and one great-grandson, Lucas; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Ray in death are his parents, wife Sue February 12, 1990, brothers Don and Roy, his sister Helen Gault, and a niece and a nephew. Dr. Mark Spencer will officiate services. Interment will be in the Fulton Cemetery.
