Leiter's Ford businessman Mr. Randy Hawk, 54, passed away on Friday afternoon, September 14th at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. Randy and his wife Janice owned and operated Hawk's Garage in Leiter's Ford where he was a master mechanic with special expertise on Minneapolis-Moline farm machinery. Born in Rochester's Woodlawn Hospital on December 28, 1957, Randy E. Hawk was the son of Robert Eugene and Esther Jean Waltz Hawk. Growing up he shared his childhood with his little sister Becky. During his years at Culver Community High School, Randy played the trumpet in the band and he enjoyed intramural basketball league. His love of music was a lifelong passion as each summer he looked forward to joining the Summer Stage Band and playing his trumpet. In 1976 with great Cavalier pride, he graduated with his class. During his youth he acquired a steady work ethic and vast knowledge of diesel maintenance and repair from his dad, spending many hours at the garage. It was June 29, 1991, on the sparkling waters of Lake Maxinkuckee, the sun shining brightly when Randy married his best friend and the love of his life Janice Borer. Together they raised three handsome sons Joe, Kevin and Brian. The family tree grew with the added blessings of two grandsons, Braxton and Jaxon. Randy adored his sons, nephews, nieces and grandsons. He was always there for them, sharing a common sense approach to life and life's lessons, influencing them as a wonderful role model during their formative years. In addition to the diesel engine work, Randy specialized in building custom Minneapolis - Moline irrigation engines for many area farmers. Randy also was a successful sales representative for the AgVenture/McKillip Seed Company. He owned a unique collection of M-M scale tractors and enjoyed the sport of tractor pulling, attending events all over Indiana and Illinois. As an armchair athlete, Randy loved NASCAR, especially Tony Stewart and Dale Jr., drag racing and cheering for the Indianapolis Colts. A vibrant leader of his community, Randy currently served as President of both Aubeenaubee Township Improvement Association and the Richland Center Community Association. He was an active member of the Leiter's Ford Merchant's Association, the Fulton County Historical Power Association, Richland Center Tractor Pullers and the Richland Center IOOF Lodge # 435. Remembered for his love of mowing grass, it was Randy's tradition to head off to Culver's Original Root Beer Stand for an ice cold Root Beer after mowing the Hawk farm. An accomplished grill master, Randy's specialties were brats, burgers and steaks---always grilling in large quantities. He and Janice hosted the annual family fish fry. Randy was known for his generous support of his communities, local business and youth, especially 4-H and the Culver youth sports leagues. Greeting him at home after work each evening were his black Labs, Jake and Daisy. He and Jake had a routine to play some ball, just to unwind. An annual tradition was planting his coveted soybean plant. Randy nurtured it and watered it adding the correct amounts of fertilizer to enhance the plant growth. Then suddenly one summer, someone pointed out that his treasured soybean was instead a moon flower. He and Janice enjoyed eating out. Their favorite vacation destinations were Florida and Branson, MO. Randy is lovingly remembered by his wife Janice at home; three sons: Joe Jimenez, Rochester, Kevin Jimenez and wife Jordan of Peru, Brian Jimenez and wife Shawna, Zionsville; two grandsons: Braxton and Jaxon Jimenez of Peru; and a sister Becky Beatty of Rochester. Randy was regarded as a second father by his nephews Ryan Beatty and Derek Beatty. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Joyce and Martin Dominique; 3 brothers-in-law: David and Mary Borer, Donald Borer and companion Pat Burke, and John Borer. Numerous step-brothers, step-sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins and his devoted canine companions Jake and Daisy also survive. He was preceded in death by his mother Esther, father Bob, and step-mother Emma. Pastor Bob Metzger will officiate services. THe Richland Center IOOF Lodge # 435 will conduct a memorial service honoring Randy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Interment will be on the family plot in the Leiter's Ford Cemetery, Leiter's Ford.
