Mrs. Mildred Brugh, 91, of Rochester, passed away at 2:52 AM, Monday, November 5th, 2012 at Rivercrest Hospital, Mishawaka. She was born in Aubbeenaubbee Township on October 13, 1921, to Charles and Estella Decker Wentzel. Growing up she shared her childhood with a brother and 5 sisters. Mildred was a proud graduate of Leiter's Ford High School with the class of 1939. On July 23, 1939, Mildred and Joseph Leonard Brugh were married in Logansport. Their union of 73 years produced 2 sons, Jim and Randy. Over the years, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were added to the family tree. As a mother and wife, Mildred assisted Joe with their family farming operation in Aubbeenaubbee Township. She plowed, helped harvest the hay, corn, soy beans and wheat. Mildred helped with the chores for their livestock of Shorthorn cattle, chickens and turkeys. They planted a garden each spring and she froze the garden's bounty for family use in the winter months. Known as an extraordinary cook, Mildred is remembered for her warm pies and cookies just out of the oven. Also in demand were her delicious ultra-fine noodles, making the best beef and noodles. Life on the farm didn't allow for many family vacations, but one summer they all traveled to Virginia Beach, VA, to the lighthouse at Cape Henry. When Mildred was growing up, her father, Charles served a stint as lighthouse keeper at this location following his Navy years. Joe and Mildred were like two peas in a pod, a team working together and living life's adventures for over 73 years. For 10 years they enjoyed the warmth of the Florida sunshine wintering in Bradenton. It was here that Mildred took up painting using acrylic as her medium. She captured still life with her brush in hand, especially flowers and landscapes. Through the years they enjoyed traveling with the Culver Military Academy Soccer team, cheering them on while their son Jim coached and their grandsons played on the team. Mildred will be lovingly remembered by her husband Joe; two sons: Jim Brugh and wife Ronda of Rochester, and Joseph Brugh and his wife Jane of Columbus, TX; 6 grandchildren: Audra Brugh, San Diego, CA, Joshua Brugh of South Bend, Jason Brugh of Flagstaff, AZ, Jim Brugh and wife Melissa of Mishawaka, Joseph Brugh of Carmel, Rachael Whitlock of Carmel; 5 great-grandchildren: Sierra Brugh, Tenaya Brugh, Noah Whitlock, Della Whitlock, Marlee Whitlock; 2 sisters: Katie Sturdevant of Bellvue, FL and Patty Cosgray of Crystal Lake, IL; and nieces and nephews who also survive. Welcoming Mildred to Heaven are her parents, a grandson, Joel A. Brugh in 2009, 3 sisters: Dorothy Listenberger, Francis Hewitt, Mary Alice Fry; and a brother Arthur Wentzel, a B-26 bomber pilot shot down near New Guinea in WWII. Father Bert Woolson will officiate services. A prayer vigil will be held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
