Mr. Michael "Mike" Dennis Chambers, 77, of Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 1:05 AM Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. On June 5, 1937, Mike was born in South Bend, a treasured son of Bertram and Beatrice Gardner Chambers. Growing up as one of four children, he shared his childhood with two sisters, Ilene and Jeanie, and a brother Edward. Answering the call of patriotism, Mike joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was honorably discharged after serving active and reserve duties. While stationed at Staten Island, New York, his oldest daughter, Caren, was born. Mike and Nancy Lee Frazier were married in April 26, 1957 in South Bend. Together they shared over 57 years of life's adventures. From their union came two wonderful daughters, Caren and Cathlene. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of five granddaughters and a great-granddaughter. In the early years, Mike was a professional painter, doing custom painting both interior and exterior projects. For the next 18 years he was employed by Talma Fastner. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Gaerte Engines as a machinist. A master carver, Mike was a member of both Fulton and Marshall County Carvers. A talented artist, he carved Indians and a variety of animals including dolphins. He created custom jewelry for his granddaughters. An outdoorsman, there was nothing more memorable than camping out under the starlit summer skies. A great Dad and role model for his daughters, Mike taught them the love and appreciation for the outdoors and instilled their love of camping and fishing. Each spring a truck patch was planted. The fall brought bountiful harvests to share with family and friends. Left to cherish Mike's memory are his wife Nancy: 2 daughters: Caren C. Parko and companion Dave Delp of Rochester, Cathlene J. Darragh and husband Mark of Indianapolis; 5 granddaughters: Paige M. Madlem and fiancé Adam Fish, Rachel J. Robinson and husband Michael, Amanda Orban and husband Ryan, Beth A. Darragh, Katie N. Darragh; great granddaughter Harper Grace Orban; 2 sisters: Ilene Osborn and husband Larry of Buchanan, MI, Jeanie Weissinger and husband Leo of South Bend; numerous nieces and nephews; and Buddy, his domestic tabby cat. Preceding Mike in death are his parents and a brother, Edward Paul Chambers. Chaplain Jason See will officiate services. Military rites will be conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the US Coast Guard Honor Guard.
