Mary Alice Wagoner, 98 years 7 months and 5 days, departed this life at the home of her daughter Linda Marquart in Kalamazoo, MI. Welcoming her to the heavens with Jesus, our Lord and Savior was many members of her family and numerous friends. Her arrival to Heaven was the long awaited destination that included the biggest family reunion imaginable. Mary Alice was the 2nd daughter of William and Minnie Davis Shonk. As a child she shared her home with older sister Beulah. Then following the unexpected death of her mother and remarriage of her father 3 siblings Evelyn, Verna and Ralph were added to their family. Mary Alice was a lifelong member of the Rochester community. She was one of the oldest living RHS alumni, a proud 1931 graduate of Rochester High School. She witnessed vast changes over her nearly century of life from horse and buggy to walking on the moon. The evolution of the TV black and white to a flat screen high-def plasma. Conquering polio to making strides in cancer prevention and treatment. The new invention of the party-line telephone to our modern day cells. One thing stayed constant in her life...her admiration and love our Lord and her church Grace. On October 6, 1939 she married Jerry Metzler, he preceded her on May 12, 1963. Later on June 6, 1969 she married Dale Wagoner who preceded her in February of 1994. Many locals will remember her as the cheerful and friendly optometric assistant to Dr. Dale Berkebile and later Dr. Tom Troutman in their eye clinics. Always there to assist the clients, during her 23 year stint, with the perfect fitting glasses and keeping them in style. Later she worked part time at the Foster & Good Funeral Home and Grossman Funeral Home greeting visitors and assisting with the offices. As a servant for her church she wore many hats. Her relationship with Grace spanned nearly seven decades allowing her to reach out as a member of the Disciple III Study Group, Prayer chain coordinator, the Giggling Gals of Grace, the Chancel Choir, the Lend-A-Hand Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a loyal member of the Woodlawn Ladies Auxiliary working the gift shop volunteering at the desk. She volunteered a number of years at the United Ministries Food Pantry. To relax and stay in shape Mary Alice enjoyed walking each day whether it was outdoors or thru the halls of Riddle School you could set your clock with her early morning routine. She was a health enthusiast watching her diet and being proper in all aspects of exercise and eating correctly. The weekends were filled with dining experiences with her sister and girlfriends, cruising down the country roads embracing nature and observing the changes of the seasons. They also found plenty of time to play a variety of card games including the spirited game of spite and malice. Mary Alice will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Ann Johnson and husband LaMar of Elkhart, Linda Marquart and husband John of Kalamazoo, 2 grandchildren Alan Johnson, and Michael Marquart, 7 great-grand children and 3 great-great grandchildren several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews also survive. Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands Jerry Metzler and Dale Wagoner, sister Beulah, and two grandchildren Marianne Moore and Richard Marquart.
