Former Rochester resident, Marvin J. Rouch, 88, passed away at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home of Fort Wayne. Marvin was born in Fulton County on Feb. 25, 1923, to Dwight and Alta (Beehler) Rouch. As one of three children, he shared his childhood with Arvella and Dutch living on a farm near Fulton. With great pride in 1942 he graduated from Fulton High School. High school sweethearts, Marvin married the love of his life and best friend, Betty Shafer, on March 2, 1946, in the Walnut Church of the Brethren, near Argos. Their union spanned 65 years produced two loving daughters, Carol Ann and Patricia. The family tree grew adding a third generation with the arrival of two grandchildren. Following his high school graduation, Marvin enlisted and served our country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his stint in the Navy, he was a member of the USS Murray, a destroyer escort and USS Young hospital crews. Returning to the states he graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1945 as a licensed embalmer. He worked at the D.O. McComb Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, for a number of years. With a diverse range of talent, Marvin later served the people of our state as an Indiana State Trooper for a number of years. He retired from the ISP in 1964 and pursued a career in real estate as a salesman associate. Marvin was a devoted member of the Walnut Church of the Brethren for nearly his entire lifetime. He was a member of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and the Indiana Association of Realtors. Other memberships include the Scottish Rite, Masonic Lodge and the Mizpah Shrine, all of Fort Wayne. As an avid reader he owned a vast personal library, among his favorites were books with fast action. Crafts and handiwork were his forte. He was especially accomplished at challenging latch hook creations. Marvin was meticulous about the care of his lawn, always manicuring it and improving the landscape. He also had a great appreciation for the stately walnut trees that graced his home. Marvin is lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty Rouch, at home; two daughters, Carol Ann Rouch, Fort Wayne, and Patricia Rahrig and husband Anthony, Fort Wayne; two grandchildren, Allison and Ryan Rahrig; sister Arvella Sutton and husband James, Fulton; brother Leroy "Dutch" Rouch and wife Jean Ann, Fulton; and brother-in-law Arthur Shafer and wife Marilyn, Elkhart. He was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of the life of Mr. Marvin J. Rouch is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walnut Church of the Brethren, 19056 Gumwood Road, Argos, with the Rev. Robert Rice officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, and one hour prior to the service in the church. Following the luncheon at his church, graveside services are at 1:30 p.m. at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery, with military rites being accorded by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36 and the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1343.
