Marjorie B. South, 93, 8228 20 County Road, Argos, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 2:30 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was born on March 21, 1918, in Ladysmith, Wis., to John Allen and Mae (Jones) Umbaugh. As one of nine children she shared her childhood with two sisters and six brothers. As a scholarship winner, she attended Purdue University majoring in home economics. During her collegiate years she ran the Faculty Tea Room. Returning to Marshall County she worked with the food service department of the Kelly Hospital in Argos. On Aug. 31, 1940, Marjorie and James O. "Jerry" South were married in southern Marshall County, at the home of her parents. Their union of over 62 years produced a daughter, Susan, and three sons, Alan, William and Robert. The family tree flourished with the additions of 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. As her children grew up, and during her grandchildren's formative years, Marjorie instilled a good work ethic. She also emphasized the importance of learning and a good education. She served as den mother when her sons were members of Cub Scouts. As a very vibrant and loyal member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Marjorie was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also assisted with vacation Bible school, Saturday church school and served as treasurer for the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Marjorie was a devoted member of the Argos Library Board for a number of years. As the matriarch of four generations, Marjorie cherished the time spent with family. Many summers were spent with the grandchildren coming for extended stays, visiting her country home. This is when she taught them about nature, as they fed and observed the backyard birds common to Indiana. They enjoyed a variety of card games including Skipbo and challenging board games. Marjorie is also remembered for her great sense and offering of hospitality. Marjorie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Susan Ringle and husband Michael, Knoxville, Tenn.; three sons, Alan South and fiance Cheri Fowler of Nashville, Tenn., William South and wife Laura, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Robert South and wife Marcia, Warsaw; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry on Oct. 31, 2002, two sisters, Louise Dunlap and Ruth Umbaugh, and her six Umbaugh brothers, Kenneth, Earl Devain, Herschel, Raymond, Glendon, and Merlyn "Mike." A celebration of the life of Marjorie South is at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the St. John Lutheran Church, 404 Jefferson St., Rochester, with the Rev. James Wasmuth officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, and one hour prior to the service in the church on Sunday. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Jerry in the Reichter Cemetery, northeast of Rochester.
