Centenarian, greatly respected and much loved school teacher, Margaret E. Newman 101 years, 8 months and 30 days, departed this life at Life Care Center Rochester, on October 5, 2013, at 12:45 a.m. On January 6, 1912, in Richland Township of Fulton County, Margaret E. Halterman, was born, a cherished daughter of George Leroy and June Elizabeth Beck Halterman. As one of eight children in the Halterman family, she shared her childhood with 3 sisters and 4 brothers. With great pride, Margaret graduated from Richland Center High School with her class in 1930. With a love for children, she pursued her dream of becoming a teacher, graduating from Manchester College in 1932. She later took classes to further professionalize herself at Ball State University. Her teaching career spanned more than four decades leading off with her first assignment at Burton School for a year then on to Richland Center. When the schools consolidated in the mid 1960's, Mrs. Newman became a member of the Riddle School teaching staff. Miss Margaret, as she was known to many of her students, inspired her first and second graders with many adventures in learning, helping them achieve their basic educational foundation of life skills. In May of 1973 she signed her last report card, retiring from a fruitful career in education. On May 6, 1939, Margaret was united in marriage with Mr. Reardon J. Newman at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rochester. Together they enjoyed nearly 52 years of life's adventures as a dynamic couple. A loyal and dedicated member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Margaret was also a member of the Rosary Society and the Good Sams Club. She was also member of the Fulton County Retired Teachers, the Quilting Club and a charter member of the 31 Club. Margaret is lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews, including George and Marilyn Halterman of Rochester, great nieces and nephews, also her church family, students, friends and colleagues she had met along life's journey. Preceding Margaret in death are her parents, beloved husband Reardon Newman on March 10, 1991, 3 sisters: Josephine Mason, Evadean Deardorff, Mary Fry; her 4 Halterman brothers: Rex, Otis, Chris and Harrison. Fr. Bert Woolson will officiate servcies. The Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Margaret will be laid to eternal rest next to her beloved husband Reardon in Rochester's IOOF Cemetery.
