Obituary

Mrs. Maebelle Scaife, 69, of Kewanna, passed away at 1:40 a.m. June 23 at the St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. Born in Marvell, Arkansas on August 16, 1942, Maebelle was the loving daughter of Ernest and Rosie Lee Lyles Howell. As one of twelve children, she shared her childhood with four sisters and seven brothers. On February 14, 1958 Maebelle married her best friend Jerry Scaife in Chicago. Their union produced two handsome sons, Jerry Lee and Lester Darnell. Over the years the family tree grew to add the blessings of four grandchildren. An entrepreneur while residing in Chicago, Maebelle owned and operated Variety 12, a shop where as an accomplished seamstress, she made custom clothing for special events, from wedding dresses to graduation suits, prom dresses to choir robes. She tailored each request with perfection, with satisfaction guarenteed. After moving to Fulton County she continued as a seamstress at Hart-Schaffner-Marx. She later worked at Federal Mogul and Walker Muffler. Most recently she volunteered at Shepherd's Corner in Delong. An artist at heart, Maebelle enjoyed carving flat figures of birds and flowers. She loved crocheting, ceramics and drawing. Her weekends were filled with adventures of garage saling---looking for the many coveted treasures that she found. Summertime brought on vegetable gardening. Each spring brought on the planting and her harvest was shared with family and special friends. Maebelle is lovingly remembered by her two sons: Jerry Lee Scaife and Lester Darnell Scaife, both of Chicago, IL; 4 grandchildren: Jerry Jamarr Scaife, Alexis Andrea Scaife, Nia Symone Scaife, Nori Skyler Scaife; 2 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Bernadine Gist of Calumet City, IL, Ernestine Worthy and husband Halbert of Chicago, Il, Nancy Thomas and companion Grover Thomas of Country Club Hills, IL, Ruthie Mae Howell-Osborne and companion Phillip McGee of Joliet, IL; six brothers: Cleophus Mooney and wife Connie of Rochester, Ernest Howell Jr. and wife Evelyn of Rochester, Johnny Lee Howell and wife Dawn of Rochester, Robert Lee Howell and wife Valarie of Chicago, IL, Delbert Gene Howell and wife Sybil of Chicago, IL, and Nadis Howell and wife Cassandra of Chicago, IL; special aunt, Maggie Mintz of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Jerry on June 17, 1975, and brother Harvey Jackson, Jr. on October 1, 2008. Rev. Andrew Murdock will officiate services. She will be laid to rest in the Leiter's Ford Cemetery.
