Lyle Kent Vandermark, 74, 1358 N. 700 East, Rochester, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at Life Care Center of Rochester. He was born in Kosciusko County on Oct. 14, 1936, to Elgie and Velma (Nelson) Vandermark. Lyle was a lifetime resident of Fulton County. On June 18, 1955, Lyle married the love of his life and best friend, Carol Spurlock, in Mentone. Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. Their union produced three children, Randy, Roy and Michele. Through the years the family tree grew to include six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A man of perpetual motion, Lyle enjoyed diverse interests. From 1955 - 1961, he was a proud member of the Indiana National Guard. As an entrepreneur from 1971 - 1981, he owned the local Western Auto franchise along with running his MFA insurance company from the office in back of the store. For 18 years he was a member of the Rochester Homes team until 1990 when he joined Michele and Rich at Action Glass and Mirror. Lyle assisted with many jobs, but helping customers with selecting the best replacement windows, meeting their needs, and custom cutting glass with the greatest precision was his forte until his retirement in 2004. Harness and sulky racing was a passion of Lyle's. He once held the world speed record behind the reins of lightning fast "Gator," a 3-year-old pacer. Since that time, the record has been eclipsed only six times. Lyle was an excellent woodworker. His craftsmanship unparalleled, creating custom pieces, cut out names, and angels for use on the desktop and at home. He shared his special creations with family, special friends and his camping buddies. With great devotion and loyalty to the Church of Christ, Lyle was an elder for over 30 years during much of that time he served as church treasurer. Singing bass, he also led the church as song leader. Lyle was a pioneer member of the Fulton County Leadership Academy during it's infancy to our community. He enjoyed helping others and was a member of the Lions Club, Optimist Club and was once selected as Optimist of the Year. Carol and Lyle both were enthusiastic members of the camper world. In the earlier years they packed up and shared many good times with their children allowing them to witness the beauty and vastness of the U.S. More good times were on the horizon as they continued with summer excursions many times multiple generations accompanying them. Over the years the couple experienced and toured nearly all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii and many provinces of Canada and Mexico. Cruising in their fifth wheel down I-80 was being relaxed and totally at home. They made many friendships and savored adventures with the Escapee's Indiana Chapter 51- Hoosier Neighbors and the Sycamore Sam's Chapter 13 Hoosier Camping groups. Lyle is lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol, at home; daughter Michele Smith and husband Richard, Rochester; two sons, Randy Vandermark and wife Rosella, Milton, Pa., and Roy Vandermark and wife Lori, Rochester; six grandchildren, Carlin Smith and Shelby Smith, Chrystal Vandermark and Nathan Vandermark, Inga Omondia and husband T.C. and Brent Vandermark; three great-grandchildren; and sister Mary Jo Wilson and husband Jay, Rochester. He was preceded by his parents. A celebration of the life of Mr. Lyle K. Vandermark is at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ, 120 E. Fifth St., Rochester, with the Rev. Jim Dillinger officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, and one hour prior to the service in the church. He will be laid to rest in the Athens Hoover Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion No. 36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343 of Rochester.
