Lois (Heeter) Baldwin, 97, died Monday, Feb. 20, at the Hospice Center at Tucson, AZ. Lois was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Delong, IN, to the late Della and William Heeter. Lois was married Dec. 24, 1937 to William J. Baldwin who preceded her in death along with brothers Norman and Howard Heeter and sisters Gertude Parker, Gladys Rector, and Ethel Flora. A sister, Wilma Hollopeter of Ft. Wayne survives along with many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are 3 children: Wilma (Dick) Melchiorre of Tucson, AZ, William D. (Carolyn) Baldwin of Rochester, IN, and Roxanna (Steven) Smith of Clermont, FL; grandchildren: Erik (Becky) Melchiorre, Dina (Jeff) Wofford, William R. Baldwin, Brad Baldwin, Brooke Baldwin, Aaron Smith, Sarah (Tom) Cira, and Molly (Josh) Woody; and 12 great grandchildren. Lois graduated from Leiters Ford High School in 1932, Henrotin Hospital, Chicago, IL in 1935 where she practiced nursing at Cook County Hospital, and 20 years as a head-nurse at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN. Lois was affiliated, for 70 years, with the Eastern Star in Ft. Wayne, IN and South Bend, IN. She and her husband were active for many years with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America in South Bend, IN. She belonged to the River Park United Methodist Church, South Bend, IN for 60 years. After retiring, as members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Indiana Dunes Unit, she and her husband spent 40 years splitting their time between Dade City, FL and their cottage in Rochester, IN. For the last 33 years, Lois and her family participated in the Trail of Courage as Grandma's Berry Patch, making lye soap and selling her natural foods cookbook of the same name.
