John F. Schaller, 90, of Rochester was surrounded by his loving family when he peacefully passed away at 6:00 AM on Monday, November 2, 2026, in Carmel.
On May 16, 1936, John was born to Ferdinand and Caroline Jung Schaller in St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, Illinois. John spent his childhood years with his five sisters and two brothers.
On June 23, 1962, John married the love of his life, Patricia Nadine “Pat” Segvich, at Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland. They shared over 56 years of life’s adventures and enjoyed raising their seven children together. Through the years, their family tree grew to include 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Sadly, Pat passed away on April 3, 2019.
Proudly, John answered his call to service when drafted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged from his duties in August 1965. For forty years, he served in plant maintenance with Indiana Farm Bureau Co-Op, retiring in 1997. Following his retirement, John and Pat enjoyed traveling together. One of his favorite pastimes included woodworking, making toy boxes and picture frames, and gardening – becoming a distinguished Purdue Master Gardener. John devoted himself to community service through his participation in the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Habitat for Humanity, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. A member of the Knights of Columbus, he initiated the Tootsie Roll Drive in Rochester and served as a Grand Knight. A man of faith, John was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rochester and later Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Carmel.
Left to cherish John’s memory are his four daughters: Anne Schaller Curran (Kevin) of Carmel, Caroline Schaller Utter and Eileen Schaller Miller of Rochester, Jacqueline Schaller Roth (Charles) of Tinley Park, IL; three sons: John Schaller (Ana) of Carrollton, TX, Jeffrey Schaller (Renae) of Fort Wayne, and Joseph Schaller (Michelle) of Carmel; 18 grandchildren: Michelle Curran, Megan Curran, Kelsey Eck (Matt), Ryan Utter (Adri), Austin Utter, Jodi McMillen (Jason), Jamie Sutton (Lee), Jarred Fairchild, Jackob Miller, Emma Schaller Heissenhuber (Steven), John Matthew Schaller (Addie), John Roth, Charles Ferdinand Roth, Jeffry Schaller, Maryssa Schaller, Ashlyn Schaller, Brinn Schaller, Hanna Schaller; seven great-grandchildren: Ella and Lumen McMillen, Alexandria, Blake and Xander Sutton, Beckham Utter, Parker Eck, and one on the way arriving in December 2026; three sisters: Margaret Hill of Rensselaer, Donna Johnson (Norman) of Merrillville, Susan Kerr (Charles) of Crown Point; and two brothers: Robert Schaller (Judy) of Albany, WI and Herbert Schaller (Brenda) of Plymouth.
Preceding John in death are his parents; infant granddaughter, Lily Mae Roth; infant grandson J.J. Schaller; sisters: Mary Roe and Laura Jean Halfman; sister-in-law, Judy Schaller; and brother-in-laws, Steve Hill and Leonard Halfman.
