Joseph Lee Alber, 73, of Rochester, passed away at 10:40 AM, Thursday, February 26, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital of Fort Wayne. On January 16, 1942, Joe was born to Thurle Paul and Glendola Mae Cummings Alber. He graduated from Rochester High School with the Class of 1960. With great pride, he joined the US Air Force in 1960, served in Viet Nam from April 1965 through April 1966, and was honorably discharged in 1968. For many years he worked in commercial construction, retiring from Rochester Homes in 2007. Joe is lovingly remembered by his companion, Dianna Cheesman, a son, Christopher Alber and wife Janel of Kansas City, MO; a daughters: Kathryn Asala and husband Douglas of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren: Samuel and Kacie Alber and Daniel and Breanna Asala; a sister, Elaina Henry and husband Bruce of Indianapolis and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Joe in death are his parents, his wife Gloria Fellers Alber, his brother R. Mark Alber and a nephew Nathan W. Alber. A proud member of the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36 for 47 years, Joe was currently serving as the Post Commander, he also served in that capacity during 1995 - 1996 and was the past 2nd District Commander of Indiana from 2006- 2007. He had previously held several other jobs during his tenure at Post 36. As a 20 year member, Joe served as the Chefe De Grac of the 40 & 8 from 1998 - 1999. Other memberships also included 43 years with Rochester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1314 and 23 years with Rochester Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #852. A celebration of the life of Joseph Lee Alber will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 19, 2015 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester with Chaplain Dan DeCrow officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Wright- Patterson US Air Force Honor Guard and the Fulton County Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Following the service, a meal will be served at 1:00 PM for family and friends at the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36. Please bring your favorite story about Joe to share during the meal.
