Obituary

Joanna B. Smith, 86, of Rochester, passed away at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester shortly after admission. Born in Monroe County on October 13, 1928, Joanna was a cherished daughter of Ivan and Mary Edwards Brashaber. Growing up she shared her childhood with a sister Carolyn and a brother Kenneth. At the age of 16 she graduated from Bloomington High School with the class of 1944. On September 2, 1949, Joanna and Everett Smith Jr. were married in Bloomington. Together they enjoyed over 59 years of life's adventures. From their union came four wonderful children: Lael, Tom, Greg and Marc. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A life long learner and educator, Joanna garnered her bachelors, masters and doctor of philosophy degrees from Purdue University. Her career in education spanned over four decades. She was Rochester High School's Home Economics teacher from 1961 - 1981. In 1983, Dr. Smith headed the Indiana Department of Public Instruction Vocational Education Sector, working more than a decade prior to her retirement in 1994. In 1977 she served as President of the American Vocational Association entity National Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers. On August 10, 1994, Governor Evan Bayh bestowed Indiana's highest honor to a Hoosier citizen, Dr. Joanna Smith was the recipient of the coveted Sagamore of the Wabash. She was a devoted member of the Grace United Methodist Church for more that a half century. Other memberships include Fulton County Retired Teachers, past board member of the Woodlawn Foundation, past treasurer of the Fulton County Republican Women, and Psi Iota Xi alumnus. In her earlier years she was active with Fulton County 4-H, serving as the leader of the Never Give-Up Club, affiliated with Richland Township from 1965 - 1975. Left to cherish Joanna's memory are her daughter Lael George and husband David of Indianapolis; three sons: Tom Smith of Rochester, Greg Smith and wife Audrey of Anderson, Marc Smith of Trevoes, PA; eight grandchildren: Katherine, Rachel, Stephen, Andy, Tony, Angela, Reed, and Lily; four great-grandchildren: Caden, Liam, Talia and Everett; a sister, Carolyn Smith and husband David of San Antonio, TX; and a brother, Kenneth Brashaber and wife Charlotte of Bloomington. Preceding her in death are her parents and beloved husband Everett Smith Jr. on September 11, 2008. Rev. Maurice Grindle will officiate services. Joanna will be laid to eternal rest next to her beloved husband Everett in Richland Center's IOOF Cemetery.
