Mrs. Joan Smiley, 86, of Rochester, entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior at 9:08 PM, Saturday, May 5th, 2012, after her son recited the 23rd Psalm and while her family sang Amazing Grace, Her death was due to tetanus, following an accident while preparing to garden, which was something she loved to do. She died at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of Mishawaka. She was born in Young America, on July 19, 1925, to Ora & Ethel Hubler McCloskey. She was one of ten children. Joan graduated from Young America High School in 1943. During her senior year, she met a new student, Paul E. Smiley. They fell in love and eloped on January 18, 1947, and started their married life with $80.00. Paul passed away on November 27, 2003. Their union of more than 55 years, produced three beautiful daughters and a handsome son. The family tree continued to grow with the addition of two more generations. They lived in the Marshall County communities of Tyner, Plymouth and Argos prior to moving to Rochester in 1977. As the matriarch of her family, she passed her Christian heritage on to them. Joan was first and foremost a homemaker; she cherished the times spent with her family. She liked to garden and can and freeze the harvest. Joan collected buttons, owls and later an array of chickens decorated her kitchen. At one time she had 2 live chickens in her back yard, and enjoyed the fresh eggs they provided. Joan enjoyed quilting, reading mysteries, and watching Christian TV shows. She was a member of the Argos Bible Church, a former member of the Argos Home Economics Club, the Rebekkah Lodge, and the Button Society of Warsaw. Joan had worked outside the home as an ad setter for a local newspaper, and as a secretary at a lumber yard. Joan will be lovingly remembered by a son Brad Smiley of Rochester, and 3 daughters: Judy Sherman & husband Mike of South Lyon, MI, and their children Sarah Hudkins & husband Brian, and Anna Sherman and fiancé Joey Rollo; Mary Jennings & husband Dr. Steve of Rensselaer, and their children, Christine Jennings, David Jennings & wife Julie, and Debbie Lapsley; Lora Pfeiffer & husband John of Bremen, and their children Mandy Ballge & husband Mark, Loring Pfeiffer & husband Gil Jones, Tyler Pfeiffer, and Jenna Pfeiffer; 12 great grandchildren, a sister Sue Wheeler of Logansport, and a brother Rex McCloskey of Galveston. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters: Wilma Straight, Gene Isom, Mary Addy, Phyllis Dillon, and 3 brothers: Don McCloskey, Bo McCloskey, & Max McCloskey. Rev. Phillip Platz will officiate services. She will be laid to rest in the Center Cemetery near Young America.
