Mr. Jehu "Smitty" Smith, 78, of Macy, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 6:55 AM, Tuesday, October 25 , 2016 at Hickory Creek of Rochester.
On January 10 , 1938, Jehu was born in Hamburg, AR. He was the treasured son of Virgil and Ludie Thornhill Smith. Growing up he shared his childhood with three sisters and two brothers.
On October 25 , 1957, Jehu married the love of his life, Maxie Earline Sled Smith. Over the years they became best friends, sharing 59 years of life's adventures. From their union came three wonderful children Susan, Lori and Mark. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of six grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
An accomplished welder, Smitty was a member of the teamsters while working at Union Tank Car in Whiting. He continued with Deitrich Industries in Hammond until he retired.
As an American sportsman, Smitty enjoyed fishing at Nyona Lake and annual trips to the lakes in Minnesota. He also hunted squirrel, deer and rabbit, then prepared them for a dinner feast.
Jehu is lovingly remembered by his wife, Maxie; two daughters: Susan Szabo of Sarasota, FL, Lori Rich of Hammond; a son, Mark Smith and wife Evie of Morrisville, NC; six grandchildren: Nicole Rich, Sunny Rich, Tillie Rich, Markus Smith, Morgan Smith, Mathew Smith; three great grandsons: Alex, "Little Bit", Dylan; two sisters: Ruth McKay of Little Rock, AR, Annie Pummill of Cabot, AR; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Jehu in death are his parents, a sister Lydia Broomfield, and two brothers: Wilbert Smith and Gary Smith.
Pastor Doug Emberton will officiate services. Interment will be in the Plainview Cemetery of Macy.
