James Harvey Funk, 81, Rochester, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Hospital shortly after admission to the emergency room. James was born on Feb. 5, 1930, to Cary and Lucile (King) Funk near Rochester. As one of 10 children, James Harvey shared his childhood with six sisters and three brothers. After high school he enlisted and served our country with the U.S. Army. His career with the Army spanned nearly three decades. Jim was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was a highly decorated soldier with more that 60 medals to his credit. One of his most harrowing moments was when the helicopter he was flying in was assaulted. Wounding the pilot, with a calm and cool demeanor Jim assumed the pilot's position and landed the big bird safely on the ground, saving all the lives on board. In November 1957, in Baumholder, Germany, James married Margaretta Schmidt. Later, on June 4, 1987, in Denver, Colo., he married Nancy Marie Musselman. Jim enjoyed camaraderie and shared good times with his fishing buddies Jim Stout, Wayne Kamp and Skip Shambarger. Besides fishing they met at the "Fluff" in Akron on Mondays and on Fridays at the Country Inn at Nyona Lake. Dining at Christo's with his family after church on Sundays was also a treat. A traveler, Jim enjoyed visits to his daughter Annemarie's in Pennsylvania, Vincennes and Niagra Falls. He is remembered as an adventurer, enjoying life and loving people. Many will remember him attired in his marine blue vest, with a smile and twinkle in his eyes assisting customers in Walmart's paint center. Always available to solve a problem and offer an opinion, Jim was there to help, cultivating many friendships. More recently, Jim greeted everyone who visited Walmart. He regarded his fellow associates as "family." James is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Annemarie Waychoff and husband Mark, Waynesburg, Pa.; five stepchildren, Glendon Wilson and husband Jeff, Rochester, Holly Menifee and husband George, Nappanee, Scott Smith and wife Leah, Evansville, and Robert Smith and Brandon Smith, both of Rochester; six sisters, Isabelle Kamp and husband Wayne, Akron, Martha J. Schultz and husband Bill, Marble Falls, Texas, Elma Swihart, Silver Lake, Matilda Rose Habeggar and husband Randy, Marble Falls, Texas, Helen "Susie" Quintanilla and husband Rafael, Wabash, and Judith Ann Armstrong and husband Greg, Converse; two brothers, Robert E. "Bob" Funk and wife Jane, Van Buren, and Hugh Funk and wife Rita, Rochester; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wives, Margaretta in April 1987, and Nancy Funk on June 4, 2003; parents; brother Arthur Funk; and son Leroy H. Funk. A celebration of the life of Mr. James Harvey Funk is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends may visit with his family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and an hour prior to services. The Rev. Dave Terhune is officiating. A military honors service will be accorded by the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars and the LeRoy Shelton American Legion posts at the graveside in the Kewanna Citizens Cemetery.
