Jackie D. "Jack" Utter, 76, 714 Race St., passed away at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis. He was born Jan. 15, 1935, in Akron, to Robert and Bina (Swartzlander) Utter. Jack graduated from Akron High School with the Class of 1953. While in high school, he played softball and proudly wore his No. 35 basketball jersey for the Akron Flyers. After high school, he served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in the Panama Canal Region during the construction of the canal. He was self employed most of his life, from a milk route after he returned from service to Utter Body Shop to Rochester Tower Co., with several ventures in between. He semiretired in 1996, staying plenty busy with his rental properties. On Nov. 16, 1963, he married Lynette Brockey. They raised three children and later divorced. Jack had shared the last 18 years of his life with longtime companion Joyce Overmyer. They shared many interests over the years and enjoyed spending their winters in Sebring, Fla. He was always willing to give a helping hand or help someone out. He enjoyed morning coffee with the guys, fishing, garage sales, family time and the grandchildren's ball games. He is survived by Joyce, at home; two sons, Randy Utter and wife Jennifer, Rochester, and Rick Utter and wife Teri, Rochester; daughter Trisha Utter, Rochester; four grandchildren, Kayla Utter, Fort Wayne, and Ryan, Austin and Jalin Utter, all of Rochester; his sister Marguerite Swick, Beaver Dam; his brother, Morse Utter and wife Pat, Akron; four nephews, Rex, Morse Jr., Todd, and Bill Utter, all of Akron; and niece Peggy Walters, Akron. He is also survived by Joyce's children, Duane Moriarty, Florida, Sonia Amber, Florida, Jerry Moriarty and wife Lyna, Etna Green, and Jeff Moriarty, Argos; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cedric Utter and his wife Betty, and brother-in-law Leonard Swick. A celebration of the life of Jack Utter is at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Jimmy Calhoun officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment is at Athens Cemetery.
