Hurndon Rudd, 83, 6352 Fort Wayne Road, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday while in the company of his loving and devoted family at his home. He was born in Salyersville, Ky., on January 21, 1927, to Noah and Julie (Coffee) Rudd, and was raised by Edna (Minix) Rudd. Growing up he was one of 15 children sharing his childhood with nine sisters and five brothers. On July 30, 1945, Hurndon married the love of his life Finettie Craft in Salyersville, Ky. Their marriage spanned over 42 years and produced nine children, Marcella, Karen, Kathy, Debbie, Daisey, Bob, Jack, David and Bernard. The family tree flourished over the years with the additions of 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and numerous great-greats. A fan of Blue Grass Gospel, Hurndon looked forward to concerts at the Denver Community Building. Saturdays brought livestock auctions at the Rochester Sale Barn and Hurndon was always among the crowd enjoying the auction action. He loved attending horse pulling, venturing around northern Indiana. An animal lover, he maintained a fine herd of pigs and feeder calves. Planting and cultivating the flower and vegetable gardens around his home was an annual event. In the earlier years Hurndon was always in the thick of things canning the garden harvest. The bounty was shared with the family and at special family dinners he prepared six quarts of green beans that were enjoyed by everyone. To relax, Hurndon enjoyed the action of Western movies, Bonanza and John Wayne were among his favorites. Keeping himself in condition, he enjoyed a daily ride with his "best friend," his stationary bicycle. Very talented with his hands, Hurndon was there to implement and oversee projects, whether it was building a pole barn with the grandchildren or helping the kids build a home he declared, "Every job needs a 'good' boss." At the projects completion he would exclaim, "it's good enough for who its for!" As the patriarch of the family, Hurndon was loved by his children, admired by his grandchildren and adored by his great-great-grandchildren. A devoted family man to four generations, he embraced nature by camping. His favorite camping locales were always with his kids and family. Each June, for well over a decade, Hurndon organized and led the family team for the Relay for Life honoring the memory of his beloved wife Finettie. If anyone needed anything Hurndon was always there to lend a helping hand, many times putting his family's need before his own. Each day at about 1:30 p.m., he would venture to Mentone, to Teel's Restaurant and enjoy lunch with his daughter Karen. After his meal he headed for the kitchen to help wash dishes, his way of contributing for his lunch. Hurndon is lovingly remembered by four daughters, Marcella Boyd and husband Keith, Karen Clark, Kathy Moore and husband Ron, Debbie Powell and husband Daryl, all of Rochester; four sons, Bob Rudd and fiance Robin, Yorktown, Jack Rudd, Rochester, David Rudd and wife Linda, Rochester, Bernard Rudd and wife Katie, Denver; three sisters, Edna Penix, Salyersville, Ky., Augustine Castle, Flatgap, Ky., Barbara Daniels, Salyersville, Ky.; brother E.J. Rudd, Salyersville, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on April 8, 1988; a daughter Daisey; six sisters, Madell Rowe, Vernie Barnett, Reva Deaton, Ula Cole, Edith Hammond, and Pauline Taylor; four brothers, Earl Rudd, Merle Rudd, Noah Adrian Rudd, and James Rudd; daughter-in-law Susie Rudd; and son-in-law Russell Clark. A celebration of the life of Hurndon Rudd will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Amber Karkosky-Litten officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. He will be laid to eternal rest next to his beloved wife, Finettie, at the Athens-Hoover Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fulton County Relay for Life.
