Herbert "Herbie" P. Davidson, 84, of Rochester passed away at 7:44 PM, Thursday, June 13th, at his home. Born in Peru on September 2, 1928, Herbert P. was a treasured son of Samuel and Louise Adamson Davidson. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister and four brothers. A proud 1946 graduate of Walkerton High School, Herbie enjoyed success in multiple sports. Playing basketball at the forward position for the Falcons, he was a defensive specialist, as a top rebounder and shot blocker, intimidating his opponent. On the track team he ran the 440 and was a hurdler. At age 15, a smooth second baseman with great ability to turn a double play, Herbie was heavily recruited by the Chicago Cubs. He played for the semi-pro South Bend team for a glove and $10 a week. Even with an extreme passion for the sport he never attended a Cubs tryout. When patriotism beckoned him, Herbie answered the call enlisting with the U.S. Army. Serving our country from October 5, 1946 - March 10, 1948, Sgt. Herbert P. Davidson was honorably discharged earning the decorations of World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan. He was also known for his excellence in marksmanship. Herbie married the love of his life, Janyce Peterson Davidson. Together they shared life's adventures until her passing on August 18, 2010. Herbie was a member of the Leroy Shelton American Legion Post, Rochester and a life member of The Mishawaka V.F.W. Post. Herbie was a member of the Elks, Eagles, and Moose fraternal lodges of Rochester. More recently he enjoyed playing euchre at the community center. A gifted engineer, entrepreneur Herbie was one of the founders and a pioneer of the fiberglass industry. He collaborated with Les Brown and his brother Donald Davidson to form a corporation Brown and Davidson. They provided the RV industry with shower and tub units. Known to many as the King of Fiberglass, the trio's company flourished expanding to 10 locations as exclusive providers to Coachman Industries and others. As an American sportsman, Herbie loved to hunt. He bagged many trophies; among them was a Mountain Ram and wild boar. He also excelled at the game of golf, playing on courses in Tennessee, Florida and Indiana. He enjoyed a unique and interesting collection of classic cars, speed boats and motorcycles. He first rode a Honda Goldwing, transitioning to his Harley. A true Christian, and disciple of God, Herbie lived his life with great compassion for his fellow man and others less fortunate. With Jesus in his heart, he conveyed random acts of kindness assisting friends and sometimes strangers whom he befriended. Paramount in his life was his family. Herbie especially enjoyed a dynamic relationship and many good times shared with his younger brother Russ. In 1991 he moved to Rochester to be closer to his brother. With a great mutual admiration for each other, together they enjoyed many adventures in life from hunting trips and fishing expeditions to the game of golf. They were inseparable and were ALWAYS there for each other. Herbie is lovingly remembered by a brother Russ Davidson and wife Karen of Rochester; two daughters: Angela Davidson of Rochester and her children Craig, RD and LeRoy, and Christine Stahl and husband Rick of South Bend and their children Marcus and Jesse; two sons: Ronald Davidson and wife Sonya of Walkerton and their children Alana, Elaine and Aaron, and Shawn Davidson of Indianapolis and his daughter Lacon; and the children of the late James Davidson: Jackie, Sarah-Lorraine and Jimmy; 21 great grandchildren; a sister Patricia Livingston of GA: canine companion Bella the Yorkie; and nieces and nephews. Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janyce Davidson, a son James Davidson, a sister Donnabelle Sherland, and three brothers: Eugene, Earl, and Don. Pastor Jerry Pitman will officiate services. Military rites will be conducted by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard and the US Army Honor Guard. The committal service will be at 2:30 PM in the Walkerton Cemetery.
