Mrs. Hazel Julia Elizabeth Conwell, 94, of Rochester was in the presence of her daughters June and Carol when she passed away at the Kindred Health Care of Kokomo at noon on Saturday, August 22, 2015. Born on December 29, 1920, Hazel Julia Elizabeth Baker was the cherished daughter of William and Tressie Dehm Baker. Growing up as the oldest of the Baker children, Hazel shared her childhood with five brothers and a sister. On February 23, 1940, in Logansport, Floyd Weakman and Hazel were married. They shared 31 years of life's adventures. Their union produced three wonderful children: Carol, June and Bill. Sadly, Floyd passed away in July 1971. In Fulton County, on May 3, 1980, Cleon Conwell and Hazel were united in marriage. Together they blended their families and Hazel acquired a step-daughter Angie and a step-son Terry. After 26 years of marriage, Cleon sadly passed away in 2006. An avid outdoorsman, Hazel enjoyed casting her line in undisclosed lakes in Michigan and Canada and catching the daily limit. She looked forward to the annual fishing trips, then at the end of each summer hosting a big fish fry with the fish harvested. From her home on the banks of the river she fed and watered the birds, deer and other wildlife that visited her backyard. A lifelong learner, Hazel read newspapers, magazines and novels. Her favorites were romance written by author Danielle Steele. To keep mentally sharp she embraced the challenges of jigsaw puzzles, patiently assembling puzzles well over 2000 pieces. She was feared at the card table as she enjoyed many spirited games of euchre, which she consistently dominated. From her kitchen command post, Grandma Hazel made strawberry freezer jam as recently as this past June. Baking was her forte' and her fruit pies, apple cake and zucchini bread were second to none. She made cookies ahead and froze them, as a treat for surprise guests. The holidays and special family celebrations brought on preparing the feast for the family. Peanut brittle was her specialty and in high demand of her family for a Christmas holiday treat. Annually Cleon and Hazel would plant a huge truck patch garden with tomatoes, corn and beans being the primary crops. Each fall brought on the bountiful harvest. Hazel would can and freeze, sharing the harvest with family and special friends. Indoors her green thumb was apparent with the beautiful orchids and cactus gardens she maintained. Always ready for adventure, Hazel was ready to go regardless of the destination. A fishing trip to Canada, playing euchre at the V. with her frequent partner in crime Janet Bisch on Wednesday nights or joining Terry, Jeri, Nancy and Frank at the Friday Breakfast Club at Tweedle Dee's. Hazel also enjoyed good luck playing the slots at French Lick and other casinos around the region. In the evening after a busy day there was nothing better than relaxing with an ice cold Miller Lite in hand. Left to cherish Hazel's memory are two daughters: Carol Ulery of Rochester, June Haskin and husband John of Carmel; a step-daughter Angie Nichols and husband John; a son, Bill Weakman; a step-son, Terry Conwell and wife Jeri; a brother, Kenny Baker and wife Jean, all of Rochester; and a sister, Betty Alderfer and husband Robert of Yuba City, CA; special friend Janet Bisch; eleven grandchildren: Debora Chaney, Brenda Van Meter, Rod Ulery, Chase Haskin, Valerie Compton, Kirt Weakman, Kevin Weakman, Leslie Corn, Christopher Vanata, Melissa Weitzel, and Becky Swaney; sixteen great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren complete the family tree. Preceding Hazel in death are her parents, husbands Floyd Weakman in 1971, Cleon Conwell in 2006, four brothers: Harry "Bud" Baker, Leonard Baker, Eugene "Curly" Baker, Weldon "Wad" Baker, an infant sister, a daughter-in-law Sherri Weakman on May 31, 2000, and a son-in-law, Ronnie Ulery on May 14, 2015 Chaplain Jason See will officiate services. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Ever Rest Memorial Park Cemetery in Logansport.
