Harry R. Sundine, 83, Brownsburg, and formerly of Rochester, died peacefully Thursday at Yellow Rose Hospice, Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Born on July 16, 1927, in Rockford, Ill., Harry was the youngest son and child of the late Thor A. and Esther (Welin) Sundine. Harry graduated from East High School, and was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rockford. Answering the call of patriotism, Harry served in the U.S. Navy attached to the first special USNCB in the South Pacific and occupation of Japan. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he began his lifetime occupation in the fastener industry at Rockford Screw Products, Mid-States Screw Corp., Rockford, Ill., and later was General Manager of National Lock Co., Greenville, Ky. Harry married his high school sweetheart, Jean C. Calacurcio on March 18, 1947, in Bluffton. She was the love of his life for over 64 years. Together with their children Steve, Becky, and Cal. They relocated to Rochester in the summer of 1968. Harry was employed at Torx Division of Camcar in Rochester for over 21 years, retiring as Manufacturing Manager in 1990. Harry and Jean spent the winter months living in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., where he enjoyed his favorite sport playing golf. In his younger years he was active in fast pitch softball and was a loyal St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan throughout his life. He was a Kentucky Colonel, Rochester member of the American Legion, Elks, and the charter Rochester Toastmasters Club. He resided in Rochester for over 40 years before moving to Brownsburg in 2009. Harry is lovingly remembered by his wife Jean, Brownsburg; sons Steve (Mary) Sundine, Rochester, and Cal (Teri) Sundine, Richmond; daughter Becky Sundine, Brownsburg; grandchildren Christina (Mikel) Geis, Robert Weller (Cassie); several great-grandchildren; special sister-in-laws Marie (Raymon) Giles, Akron; Louise Green, Fort Wayne; five nieces and nine nephews; and special friends Jim and Verna Clark, Rockford, Ill. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brothers Doyle Sundine, and Lavere Sundine; and sister Virginia Swenson. A celebration of the life of Harry Sundine will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Chaplain Jason See is officiating. Friends may visit with his family from noon until 2 p.m. Burial is at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
