Mr. Harry Ginther Jr., 91, of Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at home at 2:45 p.m. on October 12, 2013. In Rochester, on September 26, 1922, named to honor his father, Harry Jr., was born. He was the treasured son of Harry and Effie Slaybaugh Ginther . The oldest of eight children, Junior shared his childhood with three sisters Deloris, Patty Ann Beatrice and four brothers Dick, Robert, Verl and Alton. Answering the call to serve our country, Junior was a member of the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. During his stint he served in Germany and France and the campaigns of Rhineland and central Europe. His citations included EAME Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and WW II Victory Medal. He mustered out as a technician 5th grade, 851st Engineer Aviation Battalion. Junior was introduced to the love of his life and soul mate, Betty White by mutual friends. On February 21, 1948, Junior and Betty solemnized their wedding vows in Rochester. Together they shared over 65 1/2 years of life's adventures. From their union came two daughters Diana and Cindy and a son Dan. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. For over 33 years Junior was a dedicated employee of the Erie - Lackawana Railroad Company, building railroads and maintaining them for safe travel. To relax he enjoyed watching football and cheering for his favorite teams, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, Da' Bears and the Indianapolis Colts. As the patriarch of the family, Grandpa Ginther enjoyed overseeing four generations. He loved spending time with his family at the holidays, savoring all of his favorite foods. IN the earlier years Junior and Betty would meet Keith & Carolyn Bathrick at Hardees for morning coffee. More recently they have been members of the McDonald's 8:00 a.m. morning coffee group. There was many memories made while camping out under the starlit summer skies at Mississinewa Reservoir Left to cherish Junior's memory are his loving wife Betty; 2 daughters: Diana and husband Dennis DeMarco, Cindy and husband Michael Jernigan; a son Dan Ginther and wife Karen; eight grandchildren: Jodi Ginther, Candy Jernigan, Kelli Denton and husband Doug, Deke DeMarco, Chad Jernigan and wife Dana, Amy Lester and husband David, Christy Waterman and husband Ryan, Darla Beck and husband Deric; 11 Great-Grandchildren: Drew, Derek, Austin, Adam, Noah, Kaleb, Brady, Brant, Carson, Breanna, and Katee. Junior was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, 4 brothers and two granddaughters, Candy Jernigan and Jodi Ginther. Chaplain Tom Tadberg will officiate services. Burial will follow in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard and the US Army Honors Team.
