On March 4 , 1918, Esther Mae Barkman was born at home in Richland Township to Charles R. and Esther Mehling Barkman. Growing up in Richland township, she shared her childhood with three sisters: Lydia, Meriam and Ruth.  In 1936, Esther graduated from Richland Center High School. Esther was a homemaker and worked at Topps Manufacturing in the shipping and receiving departments, retiring at the age of 76.

As an avid crafter, Esther loved to crochet and embroider. The tablecloths she made were beautiful. With a green thumb, Esther could often be found working in the flower and vegetable gardens. Many of the girls at Topps would line up to get a piece of the fresh pies or cookies that Esther made. Left to cherish Esther's memory are niece and nephews: Judy Taylor of Rochester, Sven Barkman of Deedsville, Charles V. Alexander of Mishawaka, Darlene Vale and husband Bill of Fl; and special friends Connie and Mickey Baker.

Preceding Esther in death are her parents, husband, and three sisters: Lydia Barkman, Meriam Alexander, and Ruth Buck.
