Obituary

Doris E. Horn Newcomer, 72, of Rochester, passed away at 4:15 PM, Saturday, August 10th, at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis. On June 6, 1941, Doris Evelyn was born in Fulton County, the precious daughter of Charles and Velma Smith Horn. As one of 5 children, she shared her childhood with three sisters and a brother. In May of 1959 with great Tiger pride she graduated from Talma High School. In Mentone on May 6, 1960, Doris married her best friend Robert "Bob" Newcomer. Together they shared 53 years of life's adventures. They raised four wonderful children Angela, Brenda, Sherri and Tim. The family tree grew with the added blessings of 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A woman of great faith, Doris was a life member of the Rochester Church of Christ. An accomplished seamstress, she sewed for family and professionally for others making custom alterations. She enjoyed quilting creating gifts of warmth for family and special friends. To relax she enjoyed working with her hands: all venues of crafting, from beadwork to inviting Bob for an assist with making Cardinal and Bluebird whirly-gigs. Doris was always up to the challenge of discovering a new craft and employing a variety of techniques. She was amidst new projects in the comfort of her sewing/craft room. She once made an outdoor bench with Bob's help. Traveling since 1999 in the fifth wheel, Doris and Bob took to the road visiting all but about five states. Their travels also included visits to Mexico several provinces in Canada and a memorable trip thru the Canadian Rockies to Alaska. They were life members of the Sycamore Good Sams Club # 13, and Chapter # 51 of the Escapees. Their favorite destinations were Rhode Island and the winters brought sunshine and warmth in Yuma, Arizona. Doris especially was intrigued by the natural beauty of the desert. Doris is lovingly remembered by her husband Bob; three daughters: Angela Davis and husband Danny of Aurora, CO and their children Seth MacDonald, Sara Ramos, Rachael Ray, Jessica MacDonald, and Manuel Davis, Brenda Benzing and husband David of Rochester and their daughter Jacquelyn Davenport; Sherri Wagoner of Warsaw and her daughter Amy Kreft; 13 great grandchildren, three sisters: Jeanette Clemenston, of Sebring, FL; Annabel Marshall, of Mentone; and Donna Jean Arven and husband Richard of GA. Preceding her in death were her father Charles Horn, her mother Velma and husband Harold Gardner, a son, Timothy Alan Newcomer in 1983 and a brother Robert Horn. Dr. James R. Davison will officiate services. Burial will be in Rochester's IOOF Cemetery.
