Obituary

Doris M. Hood, Rochester, Indiana, passed away at 12:25 AM. Monday, December 24, 2018 at Catherine Kasper Home.  She was born in Rochester, IN on December 26, 1931 the daughter of Ellis Vern and Monnie Belle (Moore) Barker.  She married Kenneth Karl Hood on August 7th, 1949 in Kewanna, IN. He preceded her in death on October 2, 2004.

She worked for Avon for many years and was a very successful District Manager.  Her district was the Logansport/Monticello area where she oversaw 150 representatives.

She was a long-time member of the Fulton County Art Colony.  She was a very skilled landscape artist.  She dabbled a little in water colors, but she primarily worked in acrylics and oils.  One of her paintings hung for years in the main office of the 1st National Bank.  She was also active with the Fulton County Players. She played parts in plays like "My Fair Lady" and square danced in the production of "Oklahoma".  Her biggest contributions were the set productions and painting the window views.

In 1971 Doris, along with Bill Myers of Rochester, founded the Fulton County Round Barn Festival.  She was the very first grand marshal of the Round Barn parade with an estimated attendance of 8,000 people, held July 17th, 1971. Doris was given that honor as she came up with the idea of the festival as Fulton County Indiana had more round barns, 17 at that time, than any other county. Doris researched and was the author of the round barn descriptions in the Round Barn Booklet.

She had her own afternoon talk show on the new Rochester Radio Station WROI 92.1 FM when it started, where she interviewed local people of interest.

She loved to travel.  She and her husband took several cross-country trips eventually visiting all 48 continental states and wintered in Florida for several years after their retirement.

She was a Member of the Rochester First Church of God and worked in the office after her retirement. She was a gifted teacher and taught the adult Sunday school class for many, many years. She was instrumental in the merger with The Cross church.

She is survived by her four children: Ronda (Jim) Brugh, Rochester, IN; Layne Hood, Bend, Oregon; Dan (Pamela) Hood, Valparaiso, IN; Lyle (LeAnna) Hood, Daytona Beach Shores, FL.  She has seven grand kids and 11 great-grandkids, who survive.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Kenny, and her grandsons: Benjamin P. H. Hood, Joel A. Brugh, & Joshua A. Brugh.
