Donald E. Mattocks, 59, 300 E. Fourth St., passed away at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. He was born in LaPorte on Oct. 16, 1951, the son of Earl and Shirley Brannan Mattocks. Following Donald's graduation from Kankakee Valley High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving stateside near Monterrey Bay, Calif., as a chef. During his tour of duty in California he developed a love and appreciation for the coast and settled there for a number of years. A gemologist, Donald's favorite destinations were visits to the scenic Mojave desert, admiring the natural beauty and collecting a variety of rocks. Quartz, tourmaline and opal were among his favorites. As a rock hound he loved gold mining in Arizona. As an adventurer, Donald was passionate about hitting the dunes and four-wheeling, catching the breeze and enjoying the sunshine. Kicking back and relaxing at night under the star-lit skies he enjoyed the aesthetics of the millions of stars on our canopy above, the heavens. With a great appreciation of music, Donald enjoyed the music of the 1960s and 1970s especially the Beatles and Eagles. Donald is lovingly remembered by three daughters, Denise E. Mattocks and companion Billy Smith, Rochester, Amanda K. Mattocks, Calif., and Vicki Johnson, Reno, Nev.; son Mike Weathers, Logansport; mother Shirley Mattocks, Francesville; lifetime friend Joanne Mattocks, Rochester four sisters, Dolly, Tootsie, Joyce, and Kay; brother Steve Mattocks, Bad Axe, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, Bryce, Siera, Nicolle, Alysa, Joey, Chris, Jordon, Brennon, Jake, Aiden, Kirsta, Carissa, and Saryna; nieces and nephews Heather, Angie, and Steve Mattocks Jr.; and nine great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1995; and brother Tony Mattocks. A celebration of the life of Donald Mattocks is at 2 p.m. Friday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Jason See officiating. Friends may visit with the family from noon to 2 p.m. Military rites will be accorded by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36 and the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343, both of Rochester.
