Local legend, Mr. Delbert Victor Young, 90, of Rochester, passed away at 11:50 PM, Monday, December 19th, 2011 at Woodlawn Hospital. Delbert was born near Leiters Ford, on July 21, 1921, to Jesse and Bessie Shidaker Young. Growing up he shared his childhood with his twin brother Elbert, three other brothers Marion, Lowell and Elmer and two sisters Doris and Anajean. He grew up on a farm southwest of Leiter's Ford, the home he and his twin Elbert shared for nearly nine decades, until their passing. Over the years Delbert oversaw a fine herd of over forty Black Angus. He also rasied 50 - 60 Hampshire hogs and an assortment of custom blended mixed breed pigs. With an appreciation for fowl, he raised 4 roosters and two hens. Delbert embraced the life of agriculture, always looking forward to the planting and harvest seasons. Of course there was nothing better than the scent of fresh turned soil in the spring. The summer of 2009, Delbert could be seen perched on his John Deere 2255, driving the baler on a blistering hot day. The fall of 2010 was the last time he rode high in the International -2166 with Alan during the harvest, combining beans and picking corn. To relax, Delbert enjoyed watching Animal Planet, always sharing his chair with Whiskers, his loyal and devoted Airdale Terrier. A history buff, many times he would be locked on the History Channel. An outdoorsman, Delbert enjoyed fox hunting on the farm. Watching the traffic go by his front picture window was a favorite past time, especially during the potato harvest. Feeding and observing the habits of the hummingbirds and domestic backyard birds provided Delbert with entertainment. Dining out was always fun and his most favorite eateries included Paradise Truck-Stop, The Evergreen, Marshall County's Log House, and Ponderosa. Delbert is lovingly remembered by his sister, Anajean Peterson of Kewanna, a niece, Vivian Peterson of Kewanna, 3 nephews, John Paul Overmyer & wife Shawn of Rochester, Dwight Peterson & wife Venita of Winamac, Don Peterson & wife Jovy of Kewanna, Special Friends: Alan & Bea Wentzel of Kewanna, and his loving caretakers and their canine companions Elle and Romeo. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, infant Mary Young, Doris Overmyer , 4 brothers, his twin Elbert on December 15, 2010, Elmer, Marion and Lowell Young and his loving Canine companion: Whiskers, who passed over Rainbow Bridge in the summer of 2011. He will be laid to eternally rest next to his beloved twin Elbert in the Moon Cemetery, northwest of Rochester.
