Mr. David L. Ranstead, 60, of Rochester, passed away at 2:31 PM,
Tuesday, March 21
, 2017 at his residence, following a valiant battle with cancer.
On
March 1
, 1957, David Lee Ranstead was born in Fulton County. He was the first son of Richard L. and Aletha M. McGee Ranstead. David was remembered as a wonderful "big" brother always looking out for his younger siblings Rick and Karen. He answered to the nickname "Crow," to his best school cronies. With great Zebra pride, David graduated from Rochester High School with the Class of 1975.
As a young businessman, Dave began his career at Wilt's Grocery. Over the years he remained in the food service industry as a manager for Rochester's Dairy Queen, then as a sales representative for U.S. Food Service. Most recently he greeted customers as manager of Warsaw's Steak-n-Shake. He was also a member of the Manitou Moose Lodge Family Center #1107.
As a father, David was proud of Aaron and Staci. During their formative years he helped them with 4-H projects. They also raised and showed pigs, chickens, and rabbits under his supervision. Grandpa David adored his grandchildren. He looked forward to holidays and special family celebrations.
Passionate about agriculture, Dave maintained an orchard yielding a select variety of cherries, plums, peaches and apples. When his grandchildren visited he would harvest the fruit and cut it up ready to share the juicy treasures. Annually he planted a truck patch garden sharing the bountiful harvest of asparagus, rhubarb, beans, peppers, and tomatoes with his family and special friends. David enjoyed the challenges of fish farming. He maintained special pools of the coveted tilapia.
At home in his kitchen command post, David loved to cook and create custom dishes. In demand always was his apple dumplings and apple crisp. Also requested was his steaming hot chili. From his oven, came the best warm Amish bread. All of these talents were shared with his loving family.
Left to cherish David's memory are his daughter, Staci Heinzmann and husband Stephen; son, Aaron Ranstead and wife Kalyn; grandchildren: Madison Kay Heinzmann, Mylee Kathline Heinzmann, Matilyn Marie Hildebrand, Adairus William Ranstead, Aleyna Fay Ranstead and another blessing soon to arrive, Milan Lee Ranstead; parents, Richard and Aletha Ranstead; a sister, Karen Fouts and husband Ric; a brother, Rick Ranstead and wife Carrie, all of Rochester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Interment will be in the Richland Center Cemetery.
