Obituary

Former Fulton County resident, Mr. David E. Nicholas, 66, passed away following a sudden illness on the morning of January 17, 2025.

Born in Logansport on August 27, 1958, David Eugene Smith was a treasured son of Harold Eugene and Bonnie Sue Cunningham Smith.  Growing up he shared his childhood with three sisters and three brothers.  David was a proud member of the first graduating class in 1975 from Tippecanoe Valley High School.

On November 26, 2017, David married his true love, Mr. Walter Rudy Nicholas. They enjoyed many adventures over the years and blended their wonderful families.  The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of a new generation, the grandchildren.

As entrepreneurs, with a special passion for animals David and Rudy owned the pet store business "Rudy's Critters," first in Logansport and more recently in Peru.   David also attended First Friend Meetings in Kokomo.  He was a talented crafter, quilting gifts of warmth for his family and special friends.  With vast technical knowledge, David was always near or on the computer playing games, or as an internet guru opening multiple windows on his big 40-inch screen.  In the kitchen he created many family recipe specialties like Mac-A-tuna salad or simply macaroni salad.  When relaxing Xena and Niya could be found at his side in chillaxing mode with him.

David is lovingly remembered by his husband Rudy at home; 5 children: Steven Hamilton (Amber Clemons) of Peru, Brittany Meier (Andrew) of Akron, Monn Sanders (Toma Walker) of Peru, Jared Nicholas of Fayetteville, NC, Kendall Geiger (Kaite Emery) of Marion;  16 grandchildren: Callie, Celes, Camara, Clarisity,  Aaron, Annabelle, Henry, Audri, Jayden, Isaac, Kingston, Giuliana, Azsabella, Lucien, Azsriel and Renzo; 4 siblings: Pernell Marshall of Nappanee,  Tonia Marshall - Arroyo (Gabriel), Angela Marshall all of Akron, Brad Smith (Heather) of Texas; several nieces and nephews; and his treasured canine companions Niya the special blend Pit Bull/Boxer and Xena the American Bully also survive.

Preceding David in death are his parents Harold and Bonnie; three siblings: Tamela Warren, Mark Smith and William "Peanut" Hawkins.

A celebration of the life of David E. Nicholas will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday January 24, 2025, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th Street, Rochester, IN. Pastor Dr. Mike Carson will officiate.  David's family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, on Thursday and an hour prior to his service on Friday morning at the funeral home.
