David Ewing McCarter, 51, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Rochester, passed away June 12 in Tucson. He was born in Rochester, on April 9, 1960, to Phillip E. and Mary C. (Ewing) McCarter. Growing up, he shared his childhood with a sister, Anne, and two brothers, John and Joe. A proud Zebra, David was an academic top 10 student, graduating from Rochester High School in 1978. On the hardwood, wearing No. 31, he would take to the court as the flashy playmaking guard who led the team in assists and scoring with a 15.2 ppg average his senior year. "Mac" also led the Zebras to win the coveted Warsaw sectional title. He was appointed to the first-team all-Northern Lakes Conference. As a multi-sport athlete, David was a fleet-footed hurdler on the RHS track team and the RHS netmen playing doubles with David Hiatt as his partner his junior year then singles his senior year. In all he garnered nine varsity letters in four different sports during his RHS tenure. David was a devoted four-year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, president of the National Honor Society and a member of the RHS letterman's club. Following high school he attended Purdue University where he pledged to the Sigma Chi Fraternity. David graduated with distinction in 1982 earning a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing. He enjoyed a 15 year stint with IBM of Indianapolis as a marketing expert. With a keen desire to help others he returned to university life at IUPUI and earned an associates degree in radiology. Most recently David was a radiologist tech in Tucson at the Carondelet Heart & Vascular Institute. David possessed great culinary skills. His specialty dish was gran's paella. Recently his niece Abbie assisted him with preparations of this southwest delight. When visiting his family home on Lake Manitou, a favorite way to relax was on his floating lake chair. David was a loyal Cub fan. He also followed the Boilermakers and Zebras. Paramount in his life was his family. He always looked forward to returning home and catching up on the latest with his brothers and Anne. Known as uncle Mac to his nieces and nephew, they made many cherished memories together. A favorite game they played was catch. David is lovingly remembered by his parents, Phil and Katie McCarter, Rochester; sister Anne Marie Hubble and husband Doug, Anderson; two brothers, John Harry McCarter, Rochester, and Joseph Phillip McCarter and wife Mandie, Rochester; two aunts, Joan Ewing, Rochester, and Phyllis Heskett, West Chester, Pa.; two nieces, Abbie and Ella McCarter; and nephew Grant McCarter. A celebration of the life of Mr. David Ewing McCarter is at 10 a.m. Friday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Friends may visit with his family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the David E. McCarter Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Northern Indiana Community Foundation.
