Mr. Charles "Charlie" Miller, 83, of Rochester was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 1:45 AM, Tuesday, February 26th, 2013 at his home. The treasured son of Jacob and Dollie Kale Miller, Charles Norman Miller was born on July 17, 1929 in Fulton County. As one of seven children, Charlie shared his childhood with three sisters and three brothers. At the age of 14, Charlie graduated with great pride from Rochester High School with the class of 1943. On February 8, 1950 in Rochester, Charles married the love of his life who later became his best friend, Freda Faye Hounshell. Sharing life's adventures for nearly 51 years, Freda and Charlie raised three wonderful children: Terri, Kristine and Christopher. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of three grand children and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way in June. As a jet engine mechanic, Charlie served our country with the United States Air Force. Returning home, he and Freda started their family. An entrepreneur, Charlie owned and operated "Charlie's Muffler Shop," located on Race Street for more than two decades. He retired in 1992 and the following year became the Riddle School crossing guard on Main at 3rd Street, keeping our children safe until his retirement in 2009. Over the years, Charlie's favorite place to be next to home was camping, especially at the Fish-n-Fun Camp Ground north and west of Rochester. He spent many evenings enjoying the warmth of the campfire, telling stories under the starlit skies. There was nothing like observing nature as he enjoyed floating the Tippecanoe with family and friends several times each summer and fall. As the patriarch of the family overseeing four generations---Charlie was delighted with the visits of the grandchildren and more recently visits from the great-grandchildren. He was in charge of introducing the grandkids to camping and the life of the out of doors. Grandpa Charlie savored the times teaching them how to properly build a campfire and float the river without tipping the canoe, as camping is where many memories were made. Charles will be lovingly remembered by 2 daughters: Terri Miller of LaPorte and Kristine Lease of Rochester; a son Christopher Charles Miller & wife Beth of Rochester; a granddaughter Stacey Lease & companion Dustin Reames of Rochester; 2 grandsons: Michael Lease & wife Tara of Rochester, Brad Lease & wife Cassie of Lafayette; a sister Bette Reynolds of Rochester; and his canine companion Goofie, a yellow Lab mix. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Freda on February 20, 2001; 2 sisters: Margaret Shearer and Janet Riffle; and 3 brothers: Jake Miller, Jim Miller and Ernie Overmyer. Pastor Thad Stewart will officiate services. Military rites will be conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard.
