Mrs. Betty J. Draper, 79, of Rochester, passed away at 8:00 PM, Wednesday, January 21st, at Parkview Regional Medical Center of Fort Wayne. On August 13, 1935, Betty Jean Lanie was born in Fowler, the cherished daughter of Homer and Georganna Seneace Lanie. She grew up near Delphi and graduated with her class from Delphi High School in 1953. Robert Wayne Draper and Betty were married on December 22, 1956 at the Catholic Church in Delphi. From their union came three wonderful daughters, Jill, Kathy and Cheryl. Over the years the family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They recently celebrated 58 years of life's adventures. Most recently many will remember Betty welcoming customers to Walgreens. Her previous work career included stints at Maggie's, Wiles, Baxter Drugs, Federal Mogul, and The Rochester Sentinel. She was one of the founders of the Busy Belles Home Economics Club, the past president of the Richland Center Lodge and served Richland Township as the Democratic Precinct Committeeman. An animal lover, Betty embraced nature by feeding birds, squirrels and humming birds that visited her back yard. She opened her home to a variety of pets from kittens and dogs to a bunny. Each spring she planted flowers that accented the landscape of her home. In the early years it was Wayne who introduced Betty to sewing. His advice on techniques was well taken. She created clothing ensembles for her daughters. Betty ascended to a new plateau, competing and garnering honors along with her mother, during state fair competition. This accomplished seamstress won multiple grand champion wins. Betty is lovingly remembered by her husband, Wayne; three daughters: Jill Draper, of Rochester, Kathy Vanderwall and husband Todd of Rochester, Cheryl Lawson, of Union, MO; four grandchildren: Amanda and Austin Lawson, Kara and Ty Vanderwall; five great-grandchildren; and Tucker, the dark tiger cat with a unique ocelot pattern. Preceding Betty in death are her parents, son-in-law John Lawson on January 31, 2013, a feline companion Buddy, canine companion Corky, and Mecko the bunny. Pastor John Branch will officiate services. Interment will be in the Richland Center Cemetery.
