Bernard Paul "Bernie" Weiland, 84, 3337 W. 450 North, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Friday at Hickory Creek at Rochester. He was born in Chicago on Oct. 16, 1926, to Edwin and Marie (O'Neill) Weiland. On Sept. 28, 1963, Bernie and Madeline "Madge" Brinkman were married in Chicago. Their union of 34 1/2 years produced two daughters, Michaelene and Denise. Later four grandchildren were added to the family tree. Following his high school years, Bernie answered a call of patriotism to serve our country. He enlisted to serve with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago as a fireman 2nd class. During his stint he was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. Bernie was a devoted member of the Chicago Police Department, serving and protecting the citizens of Chicago for 32 years. In 1967 he was decorated as a Blue Star Recipient for being wounded in the line of duty. Following his retirement in 1995 he and Madge moved to Rochester on Memorial Day weekend making our quaint little town home. Bernie was a member of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, Illinois Police Association, IOOF and Eagles Lodges, LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post No. 36 and the Manitou Post Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1343, all of Rochester. Bernie was a loyal member of the military rites team proudly playing taps for those veterans who went before him, always following the three volleys. Bernie was intrigued with trains, he collected a variety of models and scales of locomotives. He was in the process of building the Oregon Pass on a 16 foot by 12 foot layout complete with landscape. Each year Bernie planted flowers and manicured his perennial gardens around his home. Always looking to brighten someone's day Bernie would bring some fresh cuts to share with friends at the bank or during other stops in town. To relax Bernie listened to classical jazz from the 1950s and 1960s. With great pride he was a licensed private pilot. Always giving back, Bernie volunteered at the United Ministries Food Pantry. Bernie is lovingly remembered by two daughters, Michaelene Jordan and husband Brian and their daughter Deanna, Vicksburg, Mich., and Denise DeMarco and husband Louis and their children, Brittney, Brianna, Francesca, Monee, Ill.; and brother Richard Weiland, Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife Madge on Jan. 31, 1998; three sisters, Rose, Loretta, and Teresa; and brother Edward. A celebration of the life of Bernard P. Weiland is at 4 p.m. today in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Junior Bose officiating. Friends may visit with the family from noon to 4 p.m. today in the funeral home. Military rites will be accorded by Bernie's loyal comrades, the men and women of the Leroy Shelton American Legion No. 36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1343.
