Former Rochester resident, Mrs. Annabelle "Ann" Morrett, 94, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 1:10 PM, Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. On April 27, 1921, Ann was born in Twelve Mile, a cherished daughter of Ross and Ruth Winegardner Helms. As the third oldest of eleven children, Ann grew up sharing her childhood with six sisters and four brothers. She graduated from Twelve Mile High School in 1939. Ann and Harold Darwin "Duke" Morrett were married on March 7, 1943 in Rochester. They shared 42 years of life's adventures. From their union came two beautiful daughters Becky and Nancy. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. A talented lady with a strong work ethic, Ann began her professional career with Topps Manufacturing of Rochester. She later worked for Dr. Dean K. Stinson. In 1959 she began working with the Hart-Schaffner-Marx Company, as the first employee hired in Rochester. She garnered a management position as Quality Control, as the only woman in the entire corporation with that appointment. Esteemed by the management and treasured by those who worked for her, Ann led the quality team at H-S-M with aplomb, grace and style. At the age of 76 in 1996, Ann retired from H-S-M following 37 years of dedicated service. To relax Ann enjoyed diving into a good book on romance. Her favorite author was Danielle Steele. When Indiana University's crimson and cream took to the hardwoods, Ann was always courtside via her television rarely missing a game. She was a member of the First Christian Church for over a half century. Other memberships include the Manitou Moose Lodge and the V.F.W. ladies auxiliary. As the matriarch of the Morrett family, Grandma Ann was proud to over see four generations. At home from her kitchen command post she prepared many family feasts made with love. She is remembered for her home made noodles, always accompanied by chicken or beef and chocolate pie made from scratch. The holidays brought on the buffet style meals with prime rib, turkey and ham. Ann was the official family seamstress mending, making repairs and alterations. She also made custom slacks with professional expertise for the men in her family. Grandma Ann treasured the special times spent with her grandchildren Stacy, Ryan, Jennifer and Scott. Many memories were made and special bonds created in both Rochester and Greenfield with the adventures they shared. Grandma Ann served as a role model conveying her traits of a strong work ethic coupled with her meticulous, professional appearance that she always insisted on. She was their number one cheerleader all through the years watching them grow and blossom athletically and academically. Her dedication to them continued thru their collegiate years as she sent the kids weekly care packages and money for dining out. The holidays also triggered the traditional "Black Friday," shopping expedition. The women, Ann, her daughters and granddaughters invented the term shop till you drop, gathering the bargains of the day, sharing laughs and dining out after closing the stores down. Left to cherish Ann's memory are two daughters: Becky Blue and husband Steve of Greenfield, Nancy Romack and husband Mike of Pendleton; four grandchildren: Stacy Blue Sturgeon and husband Tony, Ryan Blue and wife Kelly, Jennifer Romack Norris and husband Brad, Scott Romack and wife Christie; 10 great grandchildren: Ben, Natalie and William Sturgeon, Sophie Blue, Allen and Matthew Norris, Marcus, Kaitlyn, Emma and Noah Romack; three sisters: Lois Bowers and husband Jim of Rochester, Mary Gallahan of Peru, Elsie Strasser and husband Roger of Twelve Mile; a brother, Hollis Fletcher Helms of Logansport; two sisters-in-law: Barbara Helms of Walton, Betty Helms of Twelve Mile; and 31 nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Duke on October 15, 1985, three sisters: Rose Helms, Lena Dillman, Dorothy Crane, three brothers: John, Ed and Tom Helms, three sisters-in-law: Louise Morrett, Lula Mae Fields, Gladys Helms; and two bother-in-laws: Dean Gallahan, Cecil Fields, and 4 nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
