Life Legacy

Mr. Harold Keith West, 82, of Rochester, passed away at 9:48 AM, Friday, April 13th, 2012 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

Keith was born in Honey Creek, IN on March 24, 1930, the son of Rev. Lawrence R. and Veva Whitworth West. Growing up he shared his childhood with his two brothers Bert and George. With great pride in 1947, he graduated from Red Key High School in Delaware County. During his high school years he played trombone in the band's brass section. Following high school he attended and graduated from Ft. Wayne's International Business College where he earned an associates degree in business.

Patriotism beckoned him, and Keith answered the call by serving with the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 - 1953. He was stationed primarily in Fairbanks, Alaska. Returning home he began his business career as an accountant with International Harvester from 1953 - 1966. During this time he worked out of Ft. Wayne, South Bend, and Kokomo. While in South Bend he met and fell in love with Veta Bowen.

On March 11, 1961, Keith and Veta were married at Southlawn United Methodist Church in South Bend. Their union spanned over 51 years. The family tree flourished with the additions of 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Moving to Rochester in 1966, Keith served the Topps Manufacturing Company as office manager for 27 years, retiring in 1993. With a level of high energy and a love for people, Keith earned his real estate brokers license and worked with the Dave Helt Realty group. During this time he also served our community as a member of the board of zoning appeals and on the plan commission.

Keith never missed an opportunity to exercise his civic responsibility, especially his privilege to vote on election days. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1966, he served his church as treasurer for many years. Earlier he and Veta were members of the Come - Join - Us Sunday School class. A charter member and board of directors of the De Cycle's bicycling group, Keith looked forward to and shared in many of their adventures. During some of his vacation time he would fly out to meet the group on location and help drive the truck with supplies. Keith was the head cook for the hungry bicyclers.

Summertime on Lake Manitou brought on boating season. Keith was in the driver's seat pulling the kids water skiing and tubing. To relax he enjoyed the music of Lawrence Welk. He never missed the radio shows of Rush Limbaugh and Mike Huckabee. He enjoyed dinner with Veta while watching game shows The Price is Right and Jeopardy. Following the arrival of the third generation he followed the grandchildren's activities, always attending their theatrical productions, music concerts,and athletic events.

Keith will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Veta, at home;
3 sons: Jerome West & wife Sue of Traverse City, MI and their sons, Mark West & wife Sarah and Patrick West and wife Maria; Larry West and wife Rhonda of Almont, MI and their daughter, Stacey Zmikly & husband Joe; and Gary West & wife Laura of Plymouth, and their sons, Zachary West and Landon West; 3 great grandchildren: Matthew West, Nathan West, and Tatum Zmikly; 2 brothers: Bert West & wife Betty of TX, and George West & wife Donna of Tacoma, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Vern West in March of 1992.

Pastors Buck Padilla and Rob Mace will officiate services. Military rites will be conducted by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post #36, the Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1343, and the US Army Honor Guard. Interment will be in the Mentone Cemetery.
