Life Legacy

Mr. Denton Shaw Woods I, 67, of Kewanna, passed away Saturday, August 10th, at his home. On April 10, 1946, Denton was born in Gary to David E. Woods Sr. and Elizabeth Shaw Woods.

With a passion for auto mechanics, Denton was led to Central Wyoming Community College where he earned two AA degrees, one in Auto Mechanics and one in Industrial Arts. While in Laramie, WY he owned and operated Dad’s Auto and Truck Service. They specialized in repair and maintaining trucks for the Schwan's Fleet. They also took on the challenges of roadside repair for 18 - wheelers as well. As an entrepreneur, Denton and Margaret owned a couple of stores offering gently used, previously admired treasures.

As a US Navy Veteran Denton proudly served during the Vietnam Era. He earned a Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and a Good Conduct Medal. Denton’s memberships include Indiana Free Mason, Gary Lodge #77; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2281of Thermopolis, WY; and the American Legion, John C. Peterson Post of Warsaw.

Denton and Margaret Alice Faulds were married on April 29, 1967 in Black Oak. Their union of 46 years produced a daughter and 3 sons. Two more generations have been added to the family tree.

Denton is lovingly remembered by his wife Margaret; a daughter, Jo Lynn Shurman and husband Brian of Chandler, AZ and their children Cameron Alexander and Paige Mia; 3 sons: Denton S. Woods II and wife Kellee of St. Petersburg, FL and their children: Daniel Christopher and wife Tamela and Sydnee Elizabeth; Robert David "Kirby" Woods and wife Michelle of Queen Creek, AZ, and Samuel James Woods of Eau Claire, WI; 2 great grandchildren: Elyssa Morgan Woods and Ian Shaw Woods, and several foster children; 3 sisters: Elizabeth Dorothy Grant and husband mark of Chesterton, June Eileen Dyer and husband Jim of Chesterton, Mary "Susie" Clark and husband mark of Ocala, FL; 2 brothers: David E. Woods Jr. and wife Donna of Rochester, and Thomas Woods and wife Sandy of Cedar Lake. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceding Denton in death were his parents and a brother James Samuel Woods in December 2008.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 CST on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Wheatfield Cemetery , 12275 North St. Rd. 49, Wheatfield. Military rites will be conducted US Navy Honor Guard.
